So, Izolda was posting about names, and I decided to toss my two cents worth at her about mine.

I love my given name, because it's beautiful --Katarina. Of course, the beauty is destroyed by the frequency with which people mispronounce it --there's a frigging "a" in the middle, it is NOT KATRINA, DAMNIT!

My chosen nickname, Kat, has gotten me into allll sorts of trouble over the years. I will not answer to any variation of kitty or kitty-kat, although I recognize that someone's usually trying to talk to me when it happens. I have a friend that calls me whiskers, I have been called kit-kat, and kitty, and meow-meow, and all sorts of things like that. It doesn't help that I have a catlike manner when scritched, I go all melty and start purring.

In addition, I will look up and even raise my hand in class when a teacher calls the name "Katrina". This was never a problem until I got to college, where I made friends with a girl named Katrina. We think it's funny, but it confuses a handful of professers. Luckily, we look nothing alike, so we haven't been hit too badly by the similarity.

I am the only Katarina I know, which makes me happy. I know a handful of Kat's, the aforementioned Katrina and my clone (Kathleen) both list as Kat. I don't know any Cat's.

My last name I may eventually legally change, not because I don't like it, but because I think that Katarina Whimsy scans well, and fits with my assorted stuffnthings company, Whimsy Productions. (Note: Not an actual company, yet.) I don't recall exactly where I pulled it from, but I like the connotations, and have been using variations of whimsy productions since 2003, and kwhimsy since at LEAST 2005 or so.

If I ever have children, I will give them names that I like, and that are at least a little bit exotic. More likely, I will give them reasonable names, and exotic nicknames --Xan (from Alexander) is one of my favourites for a boy, and there are a million variations of Elizabeth that I adore --Zab, Elle, Lizath, Zabeth. I also quite like the name "Danae" for a girl, especially as a middle name. Elizabeth Danae, Katarina Danae, Penelope Danae all scan nicely in my mind.

One thing that someone told my mum when she was pregnant with me was that, if you have a daughter, you should give her a princess name. Even if everyone calls her Beth, it's nice to be able to be Princess Elizabeth when you're five and love being a girly girl.

In the internet world, I go almost exclusively as Sorcyress, which is a basterdization of Sorceress. I was using Sorceress as a concept as far back as 2001, ever since I found a beautiful sorceress miniature in mums dragon cabinant that I swiped. I spent large amounts of time drawing her in middle school, and ocassionally writing really shit poetry. When I got e-mail and IM at the start of 2003, it seemed logical to continue to use the name, which is why, for almost five years now, my e-mail address has been kdsorceress at first yahoo, and now gmail, dot com.

Until about the middle of 2005, I was Sorceress everywhere that I could get it, and kdsorceress everywhere I couldn't. That's when I basterdized my name into Sorcyress, and got myself the livejournal and gmail accounts to prove it. I always swear that eventually I'll make a full shift over, but I am profoundly lazy, and so don't bother to check my Sorcyress e-mail account more often than once every couple of weeks or so.

As it is, my web handle is exclusively Sorcyress, because it's an awesome name. I sign most things "Sor" because I am lazy, and it's faster. And because that's what OtherKat calls me exclusively, and so it just kinda sticks.

Erik is my male-self's name. He shows up in my world extremely rarely, as I've had few chances to drag it up recently. (yes, even with living in gorram Boston. I am bad.) I'm not entierly sure where the name Erik came from, other than that it is clearly his name. There are loads of awesomer male names out there (Xan, Xavier, Dmitri, Tristan, Nikolai, etc) but Erik is perfectly content with who he is.

Kwhimsy I like, but in my head I pronounce it quimsy. Quim as you may or may not know is a vulgar word for vagina, so fair warning.

Hunh, there's even a kwhimsy livejournal. I'd say it was yours but they claim to be in Germany. Google Whimsy Productions and you get a lot of hits.

As for being called variations of "kitty", someday somebody is going to look at you with a certain sparkle in their eyes and call you kitten, I bet you won't mind then. :P

It is a self-correcting issue. Think about it - if you were feeling a certain sparkle for Kat & she told you she didn't like to be called 'kitten', would you continue?

Psst. It's spelled with a C, unless he's Scandinavian. Which I guess is entirely possible. But way to steal my name, man, jeez. :P
