general update
Apr. 4th, 2025 04:25 amSo, trying to figure out what's going on lately.
I have been _incredibly_ busy and it doesn't seem to be stopping. I'm trying real hard to convert the bits of downtime I do have into reading books, instead of playing unsatisfying phone games, but I'm also trying to figure out how to actually get done all the things that Want Done without requiring too much downtime. This is an impossible goal, because I am not actually an endless machine.
The funeral was Saturday, hanging in MD was Sunday, and then Monday was all trains all the time, with a little bit of a brain crashing and not getting anything done. There's a BigTimeDeadline that has wooshed past, but gods, maybe this weekend I can get to it and not be too terrifyingly late? I'm not sure what happens otherwise.
Monday night Austin came over, which is normal --we actually met up in Davis and walked the last bit of my journey home together which was nice! We wound up watching a few episodes of Taskmaster, which felt quite fun, and then off to bed at an appropriate bedtime --unfortunately maybe the only time this week I've managed it.
Tuesday was waking up right early and scurrying off to school in time to make Many Copies and get my lesson prepped and everything. I managed to do the literal logistics, but it was a bit of a quiet/off day for my student teacher. Very pleased that my students actually by and large completed the work I left for the two days I wasn't there. Yay!
Crashed very very hard Tuesaft, including not properly making good use of therapizing. Finally went off to the grocery store, and also set a _lot_ of time limits on my phone for virtually every phone game. Tuesnight after groceries I....ate dinner and passed out? Not really sure on that one, honestly.
Wednesday was almost-late to school, but in enough time to mostly put my lesson together before my class 1 needed it. Work is currently that very hard space where I'm teaching stuff that should be review from a previous year (so I'm inclined to be kinda breezy and quick) but also very much isn't (so I need to dig down and actually teach). Everyone is cranky about this.
Wedsaft went much better, phone-game-wise. I actually set myself a pretty tight set of goals to get done in the two hours after school, they actually took three because I never remember that grading takes more time than I think it does. But I got them all done, which was a seriously good thing, there was a goodly chunk of Necessary Task in there.
Came home, feeling real focused and motivated...and then used that energy to spend like two hours on Project Gutenburg downloading a whole heap of books to put on Talia (my ereader). Which like, is a good thing to do, and has been on my todo list forever (I got Tal about fifteen months ago) but ALSO I maybe wanted to do other things? I did close some tabs at least, whcih is a translation for "finally replied to a bunch of DW posts that have been hanging around open in my browser for months".
Today I had a doctor's appointment, which actually made it a *less* busy Thursday than usual. I still had the hellishly hard Thursday schedule, where I see all my classes, made even more difficult by this being one of the most Active Teaching Days I've had in a _long_ time. Almost no downtime or kids just working on their own or supporting each other in groups. They've done enough of that while I've been out, it was time for Direct Instruction.
After school though, I did not go to the bargaining team meeting --it was just union planning, not with the district this week, but either way, those meetings tend to be three-plus hours. While they are such good three-plus hours (being more active in my union exactly when the world-at-large is blowing up turns out to feel suuuuper valuable), it's still a lot, especially when I'm running it together with my GenderFree SCD class.
So I hung around the school a bit to help out any students who needed (two stopped by for small logistics, nothing big) and then I galumphed off to my semi-annual "is your ADHD okay?" appointment. It went fine! I think I passed at doctor, which is always satisfying, and I got some reassurance that when I'm in MedsHell (the thing where my meds are not always stocked) it is totally fine and reasonable to have to send requests twice, once for my preferred pharmacy and then when they don't have it, for somewhere that does. Sigh.
Home again, actually write my program for dance tonight --which turned out to be a pretty decent program, I think-- and then off to dance! As Alex noted, we had five people _before_ 7pm, which is pretty much a record, and so it went very nicely up from there. It's my second week in a row with two three couple sets, which is amazing, but actually a slightly annoying number because it's too many to do most dances normally in a single set, but not enough to do them in two sets. One more couple and then we learn how to be All Sevens All The Time. But I make it work!
Very good long chatting after dance, and then scrambling back home to watch some Taskmaster with Tailsteak. We're on Australia series 3, which is conveniently being uploaded to YouTube just about a week ahead of us. I actually stayed awake this time, which I clearly didn't for the first episode, since I was skimming something and realizing nothing in it sounded familiar. Oops.
Then I did very much fall asleep, absolutely passed out until nowish, where I am frantically writing my words before I will go to Real Bed. The falling asleep on the couch at like ten is maybe the next big thing I need to work on in my ~mental health journey~ but seriously, if I can genuinely get myself out of phone-game-habit that'll be huge.
Goodnight!
