Very full very good day!

SamSam is visiting this weekend, and it's lovely. They got in yesterday a bit after school let out, and so we were able to head to beginner bellspractice and help out a whole bunch there last night. I got more Owl House enthusiasm from the local 12 year old, and a little bit of musicals geekery from our newest ringer, and we rang lots of various successful rounds and hunting and it was all splendid.

Today was more bells, and very excitingly, when I last looked at the spreadsheet it said like...five people? When I checked this morning it was ten and five guests. UM OKAY COOL FINE. I can lead this practice! That's...that's normal?!

(it actually went quite well. There was handling, there was called changes, just about everybody got to try something that challenged them, I went up to see the bells with Sam and Daniel P****** who is a lovely other friend visiting, and then we all hung out in the sunshine and enjoyed the marvelous spring weather (a welcome revisitation after the summer we've had this week.)

Post bellslunch, several of us picked up necessary ingredients from the haymarket for ~dinner party~ tonight. Because Daniel P****** and April are visiting Austin and Bee, and because Sam is visiting me, and because JohnB is a lovely human, we all got together for Good Dinner And Games And Stuff.

Austin and Bee made taco fixings, and Sam and I made gingerbread (mostly Sam) and we all sprawled around the table eating good food and talking good conversation. I laughed a _lot_ tonight, there's a lot of really lovely people in this group and I liked having the freedom to feel very much myself as part of it.

We played a great many rounds of Wavelength, and then went outside to see the ISS pass overhead (we're up to Expedition 71). Signing up for those SpotTheStation text alerts1 was one of the best decisions I have ever made, it is such a cool thing every time I get to wave at them.

Post ISS, we returned to play an arguing game (everyone has an animal competing in various sport-type events and we argue Who! Will! Win!) and then played a pretty great tile placement game called Shake the City. I did perfectly well at both, and continued to laugh a lot and generally very much enjoy being with these people.

I also drew a stunning picture of a middle aged dad doing the Abbots Bromley. This doesn't make more sense if you think harder about it. His polo shirt has a small image of an crocodile riding a horse and playing polo, and yes, I am extremely proud of that weird bullshit. I'll try and upload a photo later.

Then it was very late and so home again home again. Sam and I have two days with almost zero total plans, which is going to be _excellent_. Read books, hang out, maybe make more food, generally have a nice time of things. I have grading but obviously I am not going to work on it this weekend.

I hope your life is going well and you are finding joy.

1: Huh, apparently mobile text alerts are now in legacy mode and no longer supported. I have had no problem with them, but ymmv and I should probably check out the app version and see how that works as well.

Youth Trad Song: The Annotated Ephemera edition!

about 1700 words and a lot of images! But it is as complete a con-report as you'll get. )

It was a good weekend, and honestly, I think this sufficiently covers what all I did. Any time not covered by the above was probably spent cuddling and chatting with my friends, and singing all the nice songs they were leading.

1: It is me, if I were a half-centaur, half-minotaur.

2: She is my nemesis and was fool enough to tell me the etymology of her last name. Honestly, usually I refer to her in my head as "Laurie Sheepfucker" because that has a much better ring to it, but technically it is not fucking the sheep, it's getting them to fuck each other. Hence.

Way back in...2010?, the Art Institute of Boston hosted a new little event called the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo, or MICE for short. I went both because I really really like comics and because my totally rad roommate0 had a booth. It was one of my first exposures to the wonderful world of teeny-tiny zine like comics, mostly miniature autobio comics about gender, or things made of three sheets of printer paper stapled together and titled "The Dewey Decimal System is Decadent and Depraved"1, or a rare full colour whopping sixteen pages...still printed out on a home printer and stapled together by hand.

And at one point Ria was in desperate need of a food and so I wound up manning her station for a bit, and oh hey, a sheet of 8-1/2 x 11 and a pen just happened to be at hand.

So I stole a line I had seen some of the REAL 2cartoonists using on Twitter around then, and tore the paper in half and folded it up into a little book (six pages, front and back cover) and titled it "Let's Make Art In Our Artbooks!" I fucked around, drew some stuff, and that was that. After Ria came back, I stretched out on the floor with a pencil, and attempted to make a second one (musing on how difficult it is to draw when you can actually erase your mistakes.)

And that was that, except then the following year at MICE, I had the good sense of mind to make another little artbook. These weren't to *show* anyone, oh gods no. They were just little personal comics to stick in my bag and feel good about later --it is so rare that I complete physical projects, even small ones, I must protect the ones I do.

Except then there was a ...thing4 and I found myself making another edition of Let's Make Art in Our Artbooks, this time around a theme. It made for a charming yet goofy little comic, extremely self-centered, but when have I ever not been thus?

And a few days later at work, I was subbing for an art class, and had nothing much to do for a couple periods. So I bent my hand to making an artbook for the hell of it, about my current State Of The Art.

And then today, I was subbing that class again. And so I made a conscious decision to use my free time to make another little Artbook (this one about pirates).

And oh help me, because these are glorious entertainment and only take me about two hours to complete or so (maybe even less? It's hard to suss out exactly.) They are probably much less interesting to you, because again, I am self-centered, but I have scanned them all in, and am posting them here. For posterity, perhaps, or more likely because I am proud of them and would like you to see them.

It's amazing what a fascinating little burst of creativity can be assembled from a single sheet of paper. Anyways: (Image heavy under cut)

Let's Make Arrrrrrt in our Artbook )

So yeah, I have made art, in my artbooks even. Given that I already have three, I would like to see if I can average one a week (for this month), so if you have any ideas, or things you'd like to see, toss 'em out there.

0: Ria is my totally rad roommate from college. I had six other roommates, but I identify them using other signifiers. (Nurit and Genni are my totally rad roommates from post college.)

1: This is a real thing. I own this. I should read it, but I'm afraid it would be a letdown after that title.

23: web

3: Isn't this the most delightfully awkward use of footnotes I've used in a good long time?

4: On my sexyfilter? See my next post (which won't be posted until late tonight)! Not on my sexyfilter? Sucks to be you!

Jawdrop
It's worth noting that I generally draw much better than that --this was quick, in pen, and when I'm out of practise. Rest assured, all Katstarter drawings will be much more polished.

Goddammit, I wasn't expecting this to work!! How am I supposed to be ENDLESSLY CYNICAL about the universe if you lot surprise me by being sweet and generous and making me feel worthwhile?

My jaw seems to be somewhere on the floor around here, if one of you could find it for me, that'd be just awesome.

Wow. Now I am in danger of bursting into tears for a whole different reason. *love!*

I did two really nice drawings today.

I'll start with the one I did for Angel. I did it in response to the current battle thread On Sluggy.net (it's located on WGARS)One of the posters (Angel) had a really impressive enterance that was completely ruined by the arrival of a large blast of lime jelly covering everything. Of course, I just HAD to draw it. It turned out pretty damm awesome too.

But thats not my crowning glory of the day.

My crowning glory of the day would be a picture of Trudy (from GPF) I copied/drew. I put the pic up on Dmitri's screen and began to draw it as best as I could. It was mostly so I could get the folds in the clothes right. That is what I love about Jeff Darlington's style most, he has an amazing ability for drawing very good looking clothes, that actually have drapes and folds and stretch. They look real. Which is why I decided to try copy/drawing one of his comics. The one I chose was for 15 August, 2002, First Panel. It was a good picture of Trudy, and I especially liked how the dress ruffled around her legs. It looks fantastic. I think I may color it soon.

Thats all for now.
