Youth Trad Song: The Annotated Ephemera edition!
Here are the photos I took this weekend:

I love me some gender neutral bathrooms.

This is like...a slightly more sophisticated version of Ed Emberly, and I am _psyched_ to try and find a set for myself sometime. (I didn't get to play with them, because alas, I encountered the group just as everyone was packing up to go to the staff concert, but coooool)

Custom coloured chucks with suede soles glued on and the name of the muse of dance embroidered in.

I spotted this situation during the late-Saturday "bangers only" singing session.

Me getting ready for BUG SONGS

Glancing up from the bottom bunk and admiring the web of lines in different directions.

"We were going to make a bunch of these, but then our printer died after making two and I lost one of them" I have begged Ben to please make a PDF and will quite plausibly send an email in a week or two to follow up with that request, so long as I remember.
[I actually do have two photos I'm not posting, because they are of a person I don't know to ask permission --the sunlight was somehow reflecting off her crutches in a way to create these amazing halos of light on the floor centered on the bottom of each crutch, and it looked amazing.]
[I'm also redacting the selfie of me and a metamour, taken to send to our mutual sweetie who was not in attendance]

Went for a ramble with Tuesday this morning, saw there was one of those off down the hill. I especially like the splash of green from the moss.

Random rest stop in New York State. I love me some gender neutral bathrooms.
(yes, that is literally all the photos I took. I'm not generally good at event photography.)
Here are the notes I scrawled down in my little book this weekend
Technically the song is called "Julian of Norwich" and it was the whole-camp opening song, but I am intrigued of going ahead and making a specific section of my songsbook for these.
To be clear, the full lyric is "they were to be married but [she up and/somehow she] died" and let me tell you, this new version from someone else's tradition is MUCH more sinister and I _love_ it. Also like...hearing The Lilac Song sung just casually in an early song circle was a _trip_. I didn't even have to wait until the camp songs session!
Someone at the campfire sang this on Friday night, in part because "this is a song about campfires, I can't actually sing it anywhere else!". I wrote it down both as a good song and as a reminder to put "that sword girl awesome song" into my song book. (I was thinking of One of Us, but it's been long enough I couldn't remember the title.)
I knew when I wrote this note down it wasn't gonna be enough to actually go on. Let me see if I can successfully google anything.
Yeah no. It was a particularly interesting tongue-twister, and I will try to remember to email Judy about it.
I am referring to Nathanial Johnstone's recording of the oldest surviving complete musical composition currently known.
Ben and Armand sung a song about Galileo --Ben was excited because he was all "there aren't a lot of these" but yeah, I absolutely have this one. I don't know if I could lead it (acapella is not the same as pub song) but it might be worth putting in the song book anyways.
That's the complete lyrics, I did laugh very hard, I do want to be able to pull out this trick, so I should try and dig up a tune.
I mean, I absolutely do. It would be a _phenomenal_ pub song, and it would fill a good niche in terms of "raucous but also not overplayed like the other raucous songs I feel confident leading".
[I have redacted Marissa's license plate number, written so I could go put my bags in the car]
I am going to annoy the _fuck_ out of someone with this. Maybe several someones. :)
As we were pulling out, Marissa said something that made me think of "sick and tired of winter and I wish that it were spring" and oh hey, this also fills a good [explicitly late night, and hurr, also explicit] niche that is not yet filled in my songbook. I will sing this and then have developed a _reputation_.
(hey future!Kat, I will award you a dice if you can successfully manage to lead this one to/with at least three people at Beltane)
((I will deserve my reputation))
Here are the drawings made this weekend

With the exception of the taurtaursona1 which I drew at Arisia, I drew this page during Saturday morning. The attic spider and my unnamed(?) lamia biologist were during the "recovering from last night's hangover: more loud drinking songs!", the two sketches of real people were during "Camp Songs".

I drew this during the staff concert. It has nothing to do with the staff concert, I just decided I wanted to play with some two point perspective and also it's been a while since I've drawn any denizens. This is a current iteration of part of The Lounge. The duck was because ravens live in libraries, and it was definitely supposed to be a raven, but lol, obviously not.

I did the top three of these also at the staff concert. No drawing during "pop songs as pub songs" or the anti-racist workshop or naptime (in which I read a book) or dinner or kerry sets in the upstairs bathroom or monymusk in the downstairs bathroom or "bangers only" late night song time or "welp I guess we're done singing now, thanks Harris, good closer, goodnight everyone".
I drew all the bug-related ones (fleshlings aren't bugs) during the "Bug Songs" session. There is a cameo of Incendavery because I love his work so much and wanted to take a stab at drawing The Corvid.
I also had a lightning flash of inspiration at Bug Songs and drew this:

I love this piece so much and I really really really hope I can get myself together enough to draw a real, finished, version of it instead of this goofy sketch.
Also, I don't wanna put his work on my journal without checking (but note to self, try to backfill with a link if he later posts), but Dave asked how he should draw me (!) and I was all "either my dinosaur or a spider" and then I drew my dinosaur in his sketchbook as a reference and he was all "yep that" and then during bug songs he DREW ME-AS-DINOSOR-DRAWING-IN-MY-SKETCHBOOK and aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh if I were still in the habit of changing my user icon ever that would be my new icon everywhere, maybe I should upload it here specifically for drawing-posts or something!
Here are the songs I led this weekend:
The only song I did not lead and really wanted to was Laurie Sheep-pimp2's "Sweet Mary Starbuck (on the MBTA)" which I heard her sing at Maia's birthday last December, and got her to email me the lyrics a month or so ago. I considered it a few times, but it was never quite the right moment, especially at an event several hours from Boston (so would we all really get the T references?). I am slightly disappointed to realize that I didn't hear Sweet Mary Starbuck sung at all this weekend, and maybe I should put the lyrics for the regular version in my book too, because I think I could manage that one?
It was a good weekend, and honestly, I think this sufficiently covers what all I did. Any time not covered by the above was probably spent cuddling and chatting with my friends, and singing all the nice songs they were leading.

MOOP!
1: It is me, if I were a half-centaur, half-minotaur.
2: She is my nemesis and was fool enough to tell me the etymology of her last name. Honestly, usually I refer to her in my head as "Laurie Sheepfucker" because that has a much better ring to it, but technically it is not fucking the sheep, it's getting them to fuck each other. Hence.

I want a session on bells songs
*"Bells of Norrich"
Technically the song is called "Julian of Norwich" and it was the whole-camp opening song, but I am intrigued of going ahead and making a specific section of my songsbook for these.
Lilac Song:
"But somehow she died" instead of "she up and died"
To be clear, the full lyric is "they were to be married but [she up and/somehow she] died" and let me tell you, this new version from someone else's tradition is MUCH more sinister and I _love_ it. Also like...hearing The Lilac Song sung just casually in an early song circle was a _trip_. I didn't even have to wait until the camp songs session!
"Come and be welcome ye bards one and all" - Heather Dale!
Left Right Marching Song (girl scout song?)
I knew when I wrote this note down it wasn't gonna be enough to actually go on. Let me see if I can successfully google anything.
Yeah no. It was a particularly interesting tongue-twister, and I will try to remember to email Judy about it.
Write lyrics be able to lead Epitaph
I am referring to Nathanial Johnstone's recording of the oldest surviving complete musical composition currently known.
Bring Ben "Shoulders of Giants" -another song about Galileo
Ben and Armand sung a song about Galileo --Ben was excited because he was all "there aren't a lot of these" but yeah, I absolutely have this one. I don't know if I could lead it (acapella is not the same as pub song) but it might be worth putting in the song book anyways.
"On Monday morning we set sail
And we sank to the bottom of the sea"
(Intro'd w/ "I hope y'all like sea shanties!" - Nico)
That's the complete lyrics, I did laugh very hard, I do want to be able to pull out this trick, so I should try and dig up a tune.
Fuck, I need to learn 307 Ale
I mean, I absolutely do. It would be a _phenomenal_ pub song, and it would fill a good niche in terms of "raucous but also not overplayed like the other raucous songs I feel confident leading".

Auld Lang Syne but about a fish swims round & round & round
I am going to annoy the _fuck_ out of someone with this. Maybe several someones. :)
First of May

Here are the songs I led this weekend:
- Worms of the Earth, during the Friday night fire extremely-small-and-extremely-pro-reading-lyrics-from-your-book-or-phone sing.
- Hurrah Said Mary, which I love so so so so fucking much even though it's definitely overdone and there are too many verses, but no, I unironically love this banger so much. During the "Hungover from last night" Saturday morn session.
- Percy the Pale Faced Polar Bear, at the camp songs session
- I did not lead, but huge shout out to Copper for designating me as the "I can't remember the lyrics, please pitch in" person during The Princess Pat (also at Camp Songs) which was a perfect choice on their part, because I do totally know it, but also felt surprising and exciting that people see me as enough of a songleader to pitch in and cover like that? like no? I do not actually belong here? what????
- Circle Game, during the "takin' our covid tests and chilling with baby-J" pre-dinner song circle (and bonus pleasure of that being the song that people really drifted over and joined in on).
- Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, at the Saturday night Bangers Only late night sing. I led it poorly, which I'm annoyed about, but it's my own fault for not double checking my book to get the lyrics right and missing the bridge. I'll do it better again in the future, I always do.
- Worms of the Earth, at Saturday Night Bangers Only. Yes again. Look, I am gonna make this one my signature because it's fuckin' great, it's exactly the right sort of depressing, I don't have to struggle to hit the melody, and I kick ass at it. Y'all are just gonna have to get used to me leading it always, at least until I have more other songs.
- Alive Awake Alert Enthusiastic with Mogwit during Sunday morning breakfast. Pleased and excited she knew it!
The only song I did not lead and really wanted to was Laurie Sheep-pimp2's "Sweet Mary Starbuck (on the MBTA)" which I heard her sing at Maia's birthday last December, and got her to email me the lyrics a month or so ago. Have no grief beyond measure
For life is only for a moment
And time takes his toll, oh-oh-oh
The “time takes *his* toll” is because the original word is “chronos”, a male-coded time god, and I think it’s cool to preserve that personification in translation

on 2024-03-31 04:59 pm (UTC)Wow, that sounds like an absolute blast!
I really am tempted to encourage you to come to Pennsic one of these years, just for the singing and dancing. (Reminded of this because Heather is, of course, a longtime SCAdian, as is Sir Volodomir who wrote "Worms of the Earth". It takes some wandering around, but there are a lot of great campfire sings there.)
Checking: you have the recording? (Asking because I'm pretty sure I have it somewhere in my standard shuffle, so I could dig that out if you don't.)
