I am going through a staggering number of folders of music to try and get it better sorted in ways that make sense to me. part 1, part 2, part 3

  • OH NO apparently the Hitchhikers radio plays are split and some were in wherever I already found them and some are in Douglas Adams and I am _now not convinced I've found all of them_. At least the file names seem to be reasonably well named? (as in, episode and track). Oh god though. This is going to be such a nightmare to put back together and now I gotta proper flag it and uggghhh.

(okay, it might not be as hard as I think. These folders are _very_ well labeled, besides being in different locations for some fucking reason).

  • I have found more Kate Nyx singing about Dom Torreto, but I have solved some of the mystery by realizing it's off her 2 Generic 2 Winter 2 Holiday official soundtrack, so sure, there's an entire F&F theme there. I should probably watch some of the Fast and Furious movies sometime.

  • Why is tracks 11-18 of Trial by Jury in a different folder from wherever the presumed rest of the show is THIS IS WHY WE ARE DOING THIS STUPID PROJECT.

  • So like, the next part of this project (the *really* fun part) is when I start trying to listen to everything in my entire library (currently 9,781 songs. I expect that's around halfway done) and start pulling it all into playlists and the like. But we're doing bits of it here and there. Most recently, I have made a "SongPairs" playlist for, essentially, mixtape seeds if I could only find more examples1. Anyways, forgetting that I have bought exactly one Dua Lipa song along the way, because I heard it on the radio back when it was big and was into it. It's "New Rules" and dang, that pairs _real_ good with Olivia Rodrigo's "Bad Idea Right?" which has been one of my most recent obsessions.

  • I am puting Eartha Kitt into "girlpop" but I think I feel bad about it. I don't _think_ she's a Sad Girl With Pretty Voice? I mean, like, she definitely has the latter, but not the former? My categories are insufficient!

(My categories are stupid on purpose, it'll be fine.)

  • Hm. I have a single track off Suzy Izzard's "Glorious", which is a bummer and I should try and fix that sometime2. On the plus side, it is "Evil Giraffes" so like, if you had to have one...

  • I also have a collection of single little sound clips that I maybe downloaded from her website in 2006 or something? Critically, one of them is "hoddd" which is her noise for...uh...shit. Hovercraft maybe? Something to do with Achilles? I don't know man, I was asleep! But no, the important part is that this is a noise I make _all the time_ just quietly to myself when I am preparing to do things or trying to refocus or whatever.

  • MD (I think?) asked what was in the "internet geek darlings" category, and I just found a song entitled "Granger's Sunshine Regiment" and once again I am forced to kill the part that cringes because yes, I did srsly love Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality for a while, enough to have obtained at least one fan-recording from it. Internet Geek Darlings = I might not cringe if someone cool sees it on my playlist, but someone less stupidly self-assured certainly might.

  • I deeply appreciate this mashup artist (Entyme) who appears to have named their albums "Awesome Mashups" and "Really Awesome Mashups".

  • I mean, not all of Internet Geek Darlings is cringe, I stand by Eric Idle's "The FCC song!" Wait shit, is he one of the shitty pythons? Okay, a very cursory kagi search suggests not. Not all of IGD is cringe!

  • Oooo, love finding a folder that contains *almost* an entire CD. Wonder where the other 4-5 tracks from the Fifth Element soundtrack are. :/

  • Meanwhile, putting Evanescence into "GirlPop" makes me go :) so my very stupid categories are absolutely doing their job

  • OH MY GOD I HAVE AN EVELYN EVELYN SONG?! JEGUS FUCK SOR. THERE'S CRINGE, AND THEN THERE'S KILL IT WITH DAMN FIRE3.

(I am pleased that the existence of Anita Bryant gave me the correct folder to put this in, which is to say, not in anything I can actually listen to, thanks.)

  • ...this album folder includes a URL. The first word that I saw when I went to the URL was "NFTs" and the search feature is basically unusable! Sorry FlightCrank, you bet on the wrong horse!

  • Hm. It seems like maybe some of the itunes things that are DRMlocked are just not importing into Quod Libet. Which like, on the one hand good, but on the other hand...hm. That's gonna be several pains in the ass to try and track down later! (I am so happy I started my list of "artists with very few tracks" so I actually do have a chance of tracking them)

  • Heh, I'm trying not to save intentional duplicates, but this one track goes on two separate reassembled albums, so I'm allowing it (TBF one is a mix tape and the other is a compliation that I presumably later got from the person who made me the mix)

  • God, the real reason I am doing this is so I can have the mix tapes my Sir has made me back in one easy place and order. I mean, I still have the literal CDs, I can always pop those into something, but it's nice to have it in the easy-to-listen-to-music method.

  • I have finished through the F's! 1070 folders to go! It's only 9pm, so I might continue, but this entry feels pretty long so I'll maybe shove any more Remarks into another post for the future. Man, it's a good thing I've never figured out how to have a bunch of draft posts on DW, I'd be unstoppable.

MOOP!

1: I don't feel like looking it up right now, but I know I've mentioned in the past my favourite ever songpair: "you should date me instead of your shitty girlfriend (played by me in a wig)". Technically this is a music video pair, but look, it's weird it happened twice.

(Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne and You Belong to Me by Taylor Swift.)

2: Even though her stuff puts me to sleep. (this is a long-running family joke, I think she's funny as hell, but also her voice is very soothing unto me and if I am the slightest bit tired and relaxed I will just conk right out.)

3: Short version: you know how Amanda Palmer is ~a lot~? This might be one of her lottest, and yes, I am including whatever else you're thinking of.

Long version involves some not-too-harsh callouts and AfP deciding to respond in the wankiest shittiest way possible which led to a lot more harsher callouts and at least two or three afternoons of can't-tear-my-eyes-from-the-carwalk reading blogs and comments during my senior year of college. I apparently did write most of a post, but I never finished or published it, meaning it's one of the very small number of private posts in my journal. Given it's been fifteen years, I think it can probably stay locked, that's fine. But we don't need the music in our library.

Also, Evelyn Evelyn is just... not enjoyable? Like, I've enjoyed Jason Webley and Amanda Palmer's music (Webley might be the musician we have the most music of, it's either him or Scott Joplin), so when I grabbed Evelyn Evelyn from the Boomerang's bones, I figured it would be politically awful but musically enjoyable, and it just... wasn't. I didn't enjoy it at all. Plus it made me mad, which is not an experience I'm used to having listening to an album. (I've managed to enjoy gospel like "I'm Not Going To Hell" and country like "Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother.")

Eartha Kitt is great and defies all categories.

I mean, if the song is "Evelyn Evelyn," it seems to have been a revamp of what Jason Webley performed solo as "Bacteria Bacteria" previously, a live performance of which is available on archive.org!

Eartha Kitt's "I Want to Be Evil" is classic.

And yeah, a lot of Palmer's music I have is abortion-related, haha. (That and "City Hall" with Jason Webley which really is a lot of fun. Fav wedding song.)

Yeeeeeeeeeah I dumped all my AFP related music out of my spotify finally but have not gone through my local files. I only ever really liked "Elephant Elephant" off of Evelyn Evelyn because I thought it was adorable, but it definitely got overshadowed by the schtick. Which is a pity because out of anyone else it'd be adorable.

I didn't really like most of her catalog but "Girl Anachronism," "Coin Operated Boy" and "Runs in the Family" showed up at pretty critical times in my life and I'm rather pissed that she made them unlistenable by both being a supremely awful, exploitative person and abetting sexual abuse.
