Remarking on music: A maybe less exciting part 3 in a series.

I am going through a staggering number of folders of music to try and get it better sorted in ways that make sense to me. part 1, and part 2

START NEXT REMARKS WITH A LIST OF MY GENRE FOLDERS BECAUSE I DO THINK THEY ARE FUNNY AND COMPREHENSIVE

Top level folders include:
• BoyPop (including lots of mom music)
• Childrens
• Christmas (ed. note: nonzero chance of containing "all holidays" except it's not going to be any of the Judaica because that's virtually all Craig and he gets his own folder in Childrens.)
• Compilations and Various
• Electronica (Homestuck)
• Folk, Dance-y
• Folk, Sing-y
• GirlPop (including lots of dad music)
• Indie Rock or Whatever
• Internet Geek Darlings
• Mashups
• Musicals
• Sad Girls with Pretty Voices(ed. note: I frequently just refer to this as my favourite genre of music, and I'm now realizing that s00j, AJA, and Betsy Tinney are *all* in different folders which is very funny to me)
• Soundtracks
• zzz and everything else



• Ahhh, I am glad to have refound Cobra Starship's "Bring It", the song that managed to get the coveted movie-music-video deal with Snakes on a Plane. It's a banger!


• Oh cool, this folder is called "Compilations" I wonder what...oh. Oh no. It has 183 folders inside it. GLAD TO HAVE A SECRET PROJECT DIFFICULTY JUMP. (actually it should be pretty easy to sort though)


• (This folder turns out to be where many of the musicals are. Like....65 of them, apparently.)


• As an aside, as I start up today (I wrote the above in a mini-sesh I had the other day) I have 7,367 songs organized into my actual music folders. I have 1339 folders to go, but one of them is compilations, which has 134 folders left. PROGRESS!


• I am curious and confused that Flight of the Cosmic Hippo is here in Compilations because like...it's just Bela Fleck, right? It...it shouldn't have different artists? Why is it called a compilation?? Fuck, this is, as always, why I am doing this project.


• Ahhhhh, I have found the Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary fits of the Hitchhiker's Guide radio play. I am trying a very fascinating idea called "copying those onto the computer but NOT into the regular music folder". Pour one out for iTunes circa 2005 (in this case, the ability to uncheck files so they wouldn't play in shuffle).


• Okay yep, I officially put "Halloween Boooootie" into the Christmas folder, so that's deffo really just "holidays". I might go ahead and make an explicit mashups subfolder in there though, if I'm gonna have this many of 'em.


• Oh good. Disc 2 of Hamilton. Can't wait to find Disc 1. Or all the fucking pieces of it, depending on how this's been done.


• SEE YOU AGAIN BY MILEY CYRUS IS A LEGITIMATE BANGER FUCK YEAH and also I am _pleased_ that these folders are entitled "Hannah Montana 2 Meet Miley Cyrus [Disc 1]" and same but [Disc 2]. THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT.


• As I put the narrated version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas into "Christmas" it occurs to me that this really is the priority folder in all cases. Christmas supersedes any other folder!


• I know I've said this like every time, but _god_ Kate Nyx is so fucking good. I still have like 95 songs queued and they're almost all hers, I'm not gonna stop saying this. (I just came across Glitter and Gold, and I don't think I've heard it before, it's _wild_ and I might put it in my pubsongs list because UH, YEAH.


• Ah! Found disc 1 of Jesus Christ, Superstar. That's pleasant.


• Yes, this does say "Marshmallow Peeps Sing-Along". My mother is extremely good at what she does :3


• I....I think Kareoke stuff doesn't go into the library, actually? I'm not sure about that, but it's easy enough to change sometime in the future if I need to.


• Compilations -> Unknown Album is five tracks, four of which are mashups and one of which is a Moxy Fruvous christmas song?


• I did it! From "10 Things I Hate About You" to "Zombie Prom"! Now back to my regularly scheduled...1300plus more folders _@


• Dar Williams, I think, wins the award for "artist I have the most tracks from without having any complete albums" and obviously I should fix the _fuck_ out of that. I have thirteen of her songs, across five albums. Wild.
  
  (She is, obviously, a Sad Girl With Pretty Voice.)


• Da Vinci's Notebook is a close second, with eleven songs from four(?) albums. Oh sorry, twelve, for some reason Enormous Penis was stored in a version of the band without the apostrophe.


• I moaned aloud when I found the DDR folder. Look, I understand "kill the part that cringes" and all, and I really do try to wholeheartedly love all of myself, even the horrible parts from high school. BUT ALSO.


• ...this Kate Nyx song is a generic winter holiday singalong song called "Dom Torreto's Coming to Town" and it includes the lines "He sees you when you're drifting / knows when you hit the breaks / he knows you can do anything / even drive that car to space" and she sure is a woman of multiple shades and dimensions, isn't she?


• I am in the middle of the "DJ ____" and I would like to be done with the project for the night, but no, I do have to get through this entire chunk first. Which uh. So I have a _lot_ of mashups, and it turns out this is how every mashup artist names themself, apparently. (Except for Titus Jones, who I should find out if they're still doing stuff.)


• Okay, I had 54 "DJ"s, all but two of whom were mashup artists. Finished for the night. 1181 folders to go! PROGRESS!

It...it shouldn't have different artists? Why is it called a compilation??

That folder was probably created by iTunes at some point, since I think that's where it puts any song that has the "this album is a compilation" box checked (which it probably translates to some ID3 tag, I haven't poked at how it stores music metadata in the tracks lately). Given the, um, uneven quality of data in the Gracenote database usually used for CD track names and the even more uneven quality of it in random MP3 files on the Internet...who knows why those tracks got marked that way? I guarantee there are plenty of albums in my Compilations folder that shouldn't be there no matter how hard I've tried to be diligent about metadata.

Ah! The reminder that Gracenote Is Not Actually All That Good is a useful one, thank you. One of my other frustrations has been the unevenness with which multiple CD sets have been named (see the occasional rants of "why is disc one of this musical _here_ and disc two _there_") and that's also deffo a gracenote problem.

They Might be Giants, Weird Al, Jonathan Coulton, Paul and Storm, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, various meme songs (I have a copy of "They're Taking the Hobbits to Isengard" which is great, that's a legit banger)...probably other stuff as well, I'll try and give an updated list when I'm at the regular computer and not at work.

It's kindof the rough category for "stuff that my nerd friends are into, even if it's not inherently nerd".

hell yeah, Dar Williams! Do you have "This Was Pompeii"?

(due to... I don't know, being cursed by a witch or something... I only ever get attached to songs when they're recommended to me or something; I can't just seek them out. This one was featured in a Doctor Who x BBC Sherlock crossover fanfic and I have zero ability to detach it from that context. But hey, it was a good fanfic.)

I have no judgement for getting music from fanfics. Definitely some of the best songs I've ever loved were recommended to me by various folks and places!
