Nov. 16th, 2022 11:24 pmToday's been a pretty good day! I'm in one of my pleasant brief upswings, where everything falls back into place for a little while after bottoming out, and I am enjoying being here while I am.
Much excitement at the MFA1 because our furnace is broken. I am extremely grateful to my two stay-at-home roommates for fielding conversation with landlorx and various contractors and letting them into the house and generally dealing with this. I am also pleased to have landlorx who don't suck and are treating this seriously and trying to get it done ASAP (balanced with "but let's try and get a good furnace that doesn't need replacing quickly") and who brought us several space heaters --the place is actually pretty comfortable right now (which could change with outdoor temperatures).
Wednesday is my hard day at school, but I think I went through everything alright. Post classes was the department meeting, where I did my best to participate in the activity but also wound up sitting next to WorkBestie, which means we were (metaphorically) passing notes throughout the period. I had to rush off to get to my first Equity Team meeting, but WorkBestie was kind enough to lock my classroom for me (and clean up the markers? That might've been the department in general, thanks y'all!)
Equity Team is a group of staff trying to do Good Equity Work at the school, and I've been applying...pretty much every year since I became aware it was a job you could apply for. This year they finally had some vacancies (I think it's a good thing that there's not significant turnover...and I think it's a potentially very good thing that the person who left from last year is now one of the co-principals!) This was first meeting for the school, and we set norms and talked about our vision and mission and did a really nice activity to think about and share our values.
I'm actually quite happy with the little values poster I made, and though the original was collected, I might make a slightly less hasty version to hang up in my classroom by my desk. As I explained to the rest of the team "I've distilled my values into a series of pithy quotes" which I wrote (in rainbow colours down the page, natch) as follows:
Get Excited & Make Things
Kindness > Intelligence
You Can Always Start Again
Be a Comrade, Not a Cop
Sin is Treating People Like Things
Radical Acceptance of Incremental Progress
I feel like maybe I should spill *significantly* more ink sometime on talking about all of those here, or distilling further from the VERY FULL rough draft I made (which had about twice as many to start, and then gained another dozen or so while coworkers were sharing theirs, as thoughts hit me.)
Went back from my classroom with a feeling of excitement for the upcoming work, and when I swung by WorkBestie's room, I found he was still here. So we chatted for 15-20 minutes as he finished up and packed up and then as I packed up and then we walked home together and chatted for another like...nearly hour? I think I got home at 5:45, so like an hour and a half total of talking which is very pleasant.
Once at home, I did a POWER HOUR, which was mostly an excuse to read my book (I'm rereading Murder Must Advertise, and it's recent enough that I am six chapters or so in and remember much of the mystery, but eloquent enough that I don't care) but also spent some time chatting with Ezri and Rey as they made dinner.
I did some other house chores, graded my Do Nows (since I didn't have time at the end of the school day, since Weds are my day without an afternoon prep), ate dinner, and headed upstairs for a nice date with mek. We talked for a while, including looking at visit plans for next year, and then watched one episode each of Infinity Train and Taskmaster. (series 4 - the last one - for IT, series 14 - the current one - for TM). It was lovely to see him and chat and generally have a nice connecty time.
Then I finished my attendance stuff from work, and I have just a few more dailies to complete to earn a die. Will I be in bed by midnight? Almost certainly! Note to self, go turn on the electric blanket right now so the place is warm when you get there...
I hope you are well and warm and safe and happy.
