Crossposted from the #Shared-Joy-Is-Doubled1 channel in my discord:

Win number 1: Ran into an awesome former-but-not-yet-graduated student who I adored and miss and she was all "can you help me with Alg2 sometime" and I was all "hell yes" so that might happen and be awesome

Win number 2: My too-smart-for-Alg-1-probably-but-super-congenial-and-helpful student finished his test in three seconds (expected), noticed me making squares out of old passes, correctly assumed that it was for origami and asked me to teach him to make a crane, which I did and he did!

Win number 3: A Calc student I had who graduated in 2019 (the one who had such good notes that I asked for copies of them at the end of the year and she actually delivered me a folder full of PDFs bless this child) is coming back to the school to be a tutor and she'll be in some of my classes!!

Not too damn bad for a day that involves waking up before five

((also, blatant note to self, what do all these things have in common? That's right, build connections with your students, that's the part of the job you love))

The rest of the day was very up-and-down --I have a lot of students who absolutely can't handle the math they're supposed to be learning right now, so test days suck for everyone-- but those parts were really good.

Also, win number 4: Today was the day rough-draft goals were due. I managed to bang mine out relatively quickly because five years into the job I am _finally_ getting mellow about the evaluation process, but at the end of the day I stopped by Mentee2's classroom and found him and NewTeacher talking about their goals. I was able to Drop Some Wisdom and hopefully Drop Some Mellow on a _super_ stressful situation.

I am still working stupid numbers of hours, but I'm adapting to it, which is probably a cycle I do/will go through every first-six-weeks-of-school. Also theoretically eventually I will have Taught Everything so I will no longer have to create lesson plans quite so intensely, just print and play the ones I already have. Although it's my fifth year teaching the Alg1 and I'm still doing a lot of lesson design, so UM.

I do like my job. I hope you like yours.

MOOP!

1: There's also #Shared-Pain-Is-Halved and absolutely it's a Callahan's reference. I reread the first three (I've an omnibus of the not-a-trilogy) right at the start of the pandemic, which is also when I founded Free Space Dinosaur, and it turns out to have been exactly perfect pandemic reading because people are helping each other, absolute bless.

2: So, traditionally in my district you only have a mentor for first year teachers, but they've been trying to formalize a program for "if you need extra support, have a second year mentor as well" (which I definitely had a proto-version of in *my* second year) and so my Mentee is my work bestie from last year.

Old passes are such a great material for modular origami! What did you make?

Not even sure how to word this, but immediate reaction was "Callahan's, of course."
