general checkins
Jun. 11th, 2021 12:26 amI have been reading, but apparently not writing. Have an entry! Learn about some things I am doing with my life!
*I got to have Elishka come over spontaneously to watch some telly which was _so good_. (We've been watching Leverage with her using a free-with-ads site, which has just switched to paid only; I have the non-ads version). It was cozy and fun and just...so exciting to call a friend up on little notice and hang out in the same room without masks.
*Last weekend was the Pinewoods Work Day on Saturday! I found bones in the woods1! I saw so many wasp nests! There was a bird nest with two tiny eggs! I swept things and chatted with Nick (who is tall and lovely and I've known peripherally through Scottish for ages and ages but never well --it was really delightful to spend most of the day sharing work with him). I had many hugs!!!
I didn't quite swim in round pond, but I did wade up to my ribcage, and got to have a lovely conversation with a mother of a crew member who is a person who uses they pronouns but also strongly relates to the word "mom". They'll be at ESCape and I look forward to hanging with them more!
*Last weekend was also ~beach day~ with Austin, Phoebe, and JohnB, a group you might recognize as "the infamous watermelon hazing for new bellringers2". It was a very nice lazy day in the hot sunshine, with occasional paired forays into the icy waters of the north Atlantic3. I went in about waist deep, and then dunked to the neck because I wasn't going to _not_ but I'm slowly trying to become smart enough to recognize that my body just can't stand super cold water.
We mostly just sat on the sand and chatted, but eventually got into Hole Digging, and I especially got weirdly REALLY excited about making a big fuckin' hole, and eventually dug one big enough that I could sit in it and be pretty nicely wedged.
*School is brutally exhausting, but it is nice to see the students and get to work with them directly. We have a normal length day tomorrow, and then four half days. Whee!
*I also know my class preps for next year --Algebra 1 SEI and Geometry SEI. This means the first year I have the same students twice in a row (some of my Alg1 kids from right now are headed to GeoSEI), and the first year I have _all_ English learners. (That's what SEI means --Sheltered English Immersion). Also the first year I only have two preps, which'll be nice.
Coworker-bestie Clayton has Calc Honors, which I taught for three years and kinda think of as "mine" but I can't really object to him taking it on and I know he'll enjoy it.
*I have mostly been playing a _lot_ of Rogue Legacy, but I have also managed to do a non-zero amount of grading recently, mostly on Sunday and today. Yay!
*With covid restrictions less in place, Ezri and I have been experimenting with this new idea in which I go to the grocery store multiple days a week after work, and just hit up one section each time. Like, swing through just the dairy or just the produce or wevs. Getting six or seven things from the same section is easier and faster and less distracting than getting two things from opposite ends of the store, and the eventual hope is for me to take this on as a house task once the school year starts again, and just go like twice a week every week. Work -> Market Basket -> Home is really not that much longer a commute than just Work -> Home
*I have been vaccinated for long enough that I keep being mildly surprised by people saying they've only just reached their Vaxxed AF4 status, which makes me feel like an asshole every time it happens.
*I am going to go to bed now, because it is late and I have been sleeping poorly. Goodnight!

MOOP!
1: Lower jaw, some vertebrae, a long bone-shaped bone that is probably a femur. Most likely fox! Fresh enough that they still have bits of attached soft tissue, so I need to do some vulture culture research and find out if I should bury them in the yard or cover them with fire ants or what.
(Last time I found bones at a PW work day, it was an entire wing of a bird, which was super cool because it's one thing to know birds have hollow bones and quite another to see it, but I couldn't take it home because I fear the MBTA1.5.)
1.5: No, not that one, the other one.
2: This was like...either my second or third time ringing ever, we finish with practice and wander around with folks and eventually everyone except the four of us fucks off and we decide:
a) It would be fun to carve a pumpkin
b) There are no pumpkins yet
c) There is watermelon
d) Let's carve the image of a pumpkin on this watermelon!
This adventure involved buying a knife, visiting five separate CVS's, walking basically from the Haymarket to the Boston Common or back like four times, and each of us eating a quartet of a watermelon which was UM A LOT ACTUALLY. It rocked.
3: Yes, this wording is precise because I'm quoting something
4: Vaxxed AF is when you've not only received all your shots, it's also been at least two weeks

on 2021-06-11 09:45 am (UTC)I'm glad your beach day was fun. i find that hard to imagine, because the TV weather people were carefully explaining about how hot sand and sidewalks would be, and warning people that it could burn skin (or paws, if dog-walking).

on 2021-06-17 10:43 pm (UTC)The sand was not too terribly hot --warm, obviously, but I don't recall scrambling around, and when we dug the holes, once we hit damp sand it was wonderfully cool and nice.
