(Spoiler alert for this entry: I have tested negative for covid.)

So, the original plan for this week was that Austin was going to come over on Wednesday (the 30th) and he and I were gonna spend Weds and Thurs together, and then on Friday (his birthday!) we were going to be joined by his other partner and their other partner and the four of us would play board games and hang out and it would be nice. We're all in the same bubble anyway, so why not take advantage of it occasionally?

On Tuesday mid-afternoon, I realized I had a vaguely sore throat. Little bit of sniffles in the morning, too. I started obsessively taking my temperature, just in case.

On Wednesday, I reached out to Austin and we sorta checked in with each other and decided that even though I had no fever, no cough, and no serious other symptoms it was probably safest to *not* have him or others come over. This decision made me Very Very Sad because holy fuck, the safety calculus involved in this pandemic is _exhausting_. But look, if I'd gotten close enough to someone at the grocery store or out on a walk to get even just a cold (despite masks), then there's nothing to say I couldn't have also been close enough to get the Ronis.

By Thursday, I had mostly settled out and I wound up feeling mildly guilty about managing to enjoy my New Year's Even anyways. Like, I am the one who ruined my own plans of spending time with a loved one, how dare I enjoy myself anyways? But whatever, I've been in communication with the boy about various things, including being crazy. It's all fine. I also made phone calls and scheduled a test at the S'ville drive-in clinic for their second earliest appointment...Friday, Jan8th1.

Friday morning started with me lollygagging in bed (like you do on New Year's Day) and around 11:30 I received a call back from my regular doctor's office and their covid line (they had warned me when making the phone calls on Weds/Thurs that it would take 24-48 hours for a callback, so totally expected). I was kind and accommodating to the person on the phone, and so after she suggested and I rejected appts for Mon/Tues morning (again, school), she was all "oh well if you really are close enough there's an appt in 45 minutes at the Davis Sq clinic".

I assured her I was, hauled ass out of bed and got dressed and ate breakfast and stuff, and biked to Davis. Where I hit a mild hiccup as I had completely forgotten to bring my bike lock and felt like I maybe did not quite have enough time to bike home and back again to fix this problem but couldn't just like...bring the bike into the building, right? I came up with a Clever Plan2 and went to the doctor.

The doctor and nurse were both pretty cool (I think it helped that, again, I try really hard to be polite and accommodating to service people who are doing me a favour, and I didn't try to like...immediately rip off my mask or whatever. I in fact kept it on the entire time except when explicitly instructed to remove it. Doctor said some very reassuring stuff about the fact that I had come in even with very mild symptoms since apparently there's been a lot of ignoring the mild and then they get much worse3, so that made me feel less hypochondriac-y. Asked a bunch of symptoms questions (basically all of which were "nope" --it really was just mild sore throat and a little bit of the sniffles) and then ran tests for strep and covid.

After the tests, Doc was all "and if you are able to stay here for 60-90 minutes, we'll bring you the results right here" (and unspoken "and save everyone a phone call"). I double-checked that it wouldn't be safer for me to go outside (something something really good air filter in the tiny exam room) and confirmed that I had a perfectly good book and no plans so was happy to wait.

Initial strep test came back very quickly negative, then negative covid. The covid was the really deep nose thing, which like...I have done that before at a kink con and it was a lot more fun with an audience and a top who did the patter at me to make it intentionally a freaky experience. But it was definitely not the worst thing a doctor has put into my body4 and I'll do it again fwen I have to.

When Doc had said "wait 60-90 minutes" I realized that maybe I should not leave my bike unattended for that long and did a quick scouting of "who is in the neighborhood who I can strongarm into coming to Davis and stealing my bike". As it turned out, the timing of the rapid test was actually quite rapid, and I managed to just barely beat Elishka to my bike location, with a negative test result and therefore a lovely excuse to walk back home and around the block a few times.

Elishka is a Good Cookie, so that was really lovely walk-and-talk time, as I complimented all their clothes and we discussed how much capitalism blows and stuff and did a nice round of the "okay, well, I know I am a horrible person but YOU are of course fantastic and should be kind to yourself" at each other. Ah, neurodiverse bonding at its best!

When I let Austin know that I had tested negative, he came back with a "so, maybe I could visit tomorrow night then" which was honestly incredibly warm-fuzzy-inducing since I genuinely wouldn't have expected it. I tossed him my various parameters (stuff originally scheduled for Sat/Sun because I hadn't planned to have him at any time) and he tossed me mine, and he wound up coming over for probably the shortest visit we've had the entire pandemic5 - just under 24 hours total.

It was a lovely visit though! He arrived right around the time I was scheduled to play Among Us with a group of friends, and so we curled up on the bed and he watched and occasionally distracted me with goofy memes from his phone or Important Chess Business or general good-natured snark as I murdered all my friends. We played MiraHQ, and I successfully got my very first vent-kill, so I'm proud of how it turned out.

After that we wound up watching a surprisingly long (but extremely compelling) video about why the music and sound design of Cats(2019) was so awful (Austin laughed at some of the specific music jokes, I sang along with all the song snippets) and then had nice family dinner with Ezri and Rey. We played horde chess (I played horde and lost both times, badly the first, and much better the second.6) and snuggled and showed each other pictures from Chrimmas and stuff and generally had a nice visit.

On Sunday he went rushing home to ring a QP (they made it, yay!) and I went off to teach Charis how to play Agricola with mom's help (I won surprisingly well --surprising both in that I did better than expected on points and that I ended the game with a three room wood house and fifteen animals, neither of which is normal for me) and then the rest of the day was the usual fucking around and being distracted and trying to ignore the fact that I have work tomorrow.

I hope your New Year has started well, and regardless of the start, I hope it continues well. I love you.

MOOP!

1: They did have appts available for Thursday, but only during teaching hours. If I had had any more symptoms than "back of the throat is mildly upset" I would have been more likely to ditch work for it.

2: Which I will not be revealing on here, in case I have to use it again in the future.

3: With the unspoken "and in that time, the people affected probably weren't quarantining or wevs".

4: Yinz know how I don't really "do" receiving penetrative intercourse? See also pap smears and how much they suuuuuuuuuuck.

5: Mostly he's been coming over about every other weekend, arriving Friday "after work" and leaving Sunday "around dinnertime". This does give us a nice two week gap between seeing each other for just-in-case-someone-in-one-of-the-households-does-symptoms, and of course we've jiggered those timings around to accommodate Other Weird.

Horde chess sounds like a good idea. I don't entirely understand this rule, though: "However, Pawns of the Pieces may not capture Pawns on the first rank that have moved two squares as it is not a valid en passant capture."

Is it saying that en passant doesn't apply to the Pawns side, or that it does?

I *think* what it's trying to say is:

* Pawns on the first rank may advance 2
* Pawns on the first rank that advance 2 are NOT subject to en passant capture

...but the sentence seems to be missing a piece and/or misphrased.

I will always endorse people playing chess variants. I'm a big fan of cylindrical chess (left side connects to right side). Another fun one is Highlander-chess is also fun (pieces get the ability to move the way any piece they captured. So for example if a knight captures a rook, the knight can then make either rook moves or knight moves.)

Yay for negative Covid test!

And ooo, neat chess variant that I'd never heard of before!

Footnote #6 seems to be off on an adventure somewhere?
