Jan. 27th, 2011 05:20 pmThings I am grateful for today: The fact that my mother never bought into the EVERYONE ONLINE WILL KILL YOU mentality while I was growing up.
Did she keep track of what I was doing? Of course she did. I had rules, I had the understanding that she could look at my history at any point1, I wasn't allowed to give out my information, and when I met people off the internet, she met them with me.
But it wasn't drilled into my head from the beginning that I WAS GOING TO BE KIDNAPPED AND DIE. Because unlike some parents, my mother actually made an effort to understand the technology I was using, and keep open lines of communication about it.

on 2011-01-27 10:29 pm (UTC)... which further proves that W&I are truly hypertwins 'cause on our contact page on the Hypertwiki the header over our *ohnoes* street address reads: "Mailing, stalking, and child-abduction address:" ;D

Besides, it's okay, you're a real life friend. Real life people will never hurt you.

on 2011-01-31 10:58 pm (UTC)I believe that had I had access to the Internet when I was in high school, I would have ended up dead in a ditch somewhere. Even meeting people online at the ripe old age of 30-something, I was amazingly stupid and ill-prepared and had to get myself out of several hairy situations. Whew!
Here's to a future filled with meeting all sorts of awesome folks online and off.
