Things I am grateful for today: The fact that my mother never bought into the EVERYONE ONLINE WILL KILL YOU mentality while I was growing up.

Did she keep track of what I was doing? Of course she did. I had rules, I had the understanding that she could look at my history at any point1, I wasn't allowed to give out my information, and when I met people off the internet, she met them with me.

But it wasn't drilled into my head from the beginning that I WAS GOING TO BE KIDNAPPED AND DIE. Because unlike some parents, my mother actually made an effort to understand the technology I was using, and keep open lines of communication about it.

Ohgods, yarrrr, shocking right? i'll never forget the cow my sister had when her teen-aged daughter first uploaded a slide show of photographs of her and some friends set to music to GASP youtube! You'd think that she had just told someone to come and kidnap her and do dreadful things to her before killing her and leaving her in a ditch somewhere! She actually made her take it back down again too! *shakes head* My sister has relaxed a bit since then but she still has this whole Stranger Anxiety thing going that freaks me out a bit...

... which further proves that W&I are truly hypertwins 'cause on our contact page on the Hypertwiki the header over our *ohnoes* street address reads: "Mailing, stalking, and child-abduction address:" ;D

No kidnappings. Strictly against the rules.

Besides, it's okay, you're a real life friend. Real life people will never hurt you.

You seem to have accidentally a footnote.

My mom flipped her nut when I started getting online and told me that I was not allowed to run off with an older man.

well I ran off with a younger man so there.

What would footnote 1 have said, if it were in the post? :)

I'm going to guess that the footnote would have had something to do with not being allowed to erase the internet history, if it existed. Do I win?

I theorize that it would have been, "I don't think she ever did check my history, because she trusted me. But the threat was there."

I've often felt grateful for the exact opposite: my mother raised me to be all manners of paranoid, and then trusted me to have common sense and left me to my own choices without terribly much oversight.

It is possible that your mother actually should have been worried and that your survival is do to quantum immortality. There are issues with this hypothesis even if one accepts many-worlds, since one would then expect from your perspective to see lots of people who had been kidnapped and killed.

Jenny never used the internet1, and she did end up dead in a ditch. KIDS -- ALWAYS TALK TO PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET -- IT CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE!

1. Because, of course, it hadn't been invented yet.

Is it wrong that I laughed at this? Not that Jenny wound up dead in a ditch --that really is horrible-- but it's a particularly clever phrasing.

Your mom is a brave and wondrous parent. I remember fondly and with great admiration her preparations to raise you and your sibs to be savvy and safe individuals from a pretty young age.

I believe that had I had access to the Internet when I was in high school, I would have ended up dead in a ditch somewhere. Even meeting people online at the ripe old age of 30-something, I was amazingly stupid and ill-prepared and had to get myself out of several hairy situations. Whew!

Here's to a future filled with meeting all sorts of awesome folks online and off.
