There is nothing quite as perfect as solving a tricky algebra problem. You must understand, Skullx--I multiply big numbers for fun sometimes. I tend to add/subtract/multiply in my head for small things. I am a math person, at heart.
Y'know, besides all the other things I am, like a writer and doodler and stuff. :P
But there's so many areas where math and art intertwine! Just look at an Escher drawing or listen to the use of the twelve-tone technique in modern atonal music. Or how about The huge levels of recursion in the experimental novel "House of Leaves"? Or if modern stuff isn't to your taste, there's, well, basically any and all forms of music. Bach's stuff comes to mind rather quickly. And architecture? Sculpture? 'Tis math!
I never said math and art didn't join. I fact while typing comments to you I purposely avoided making connections of that nature.
I'm just saying "I" don't like math. I received my only failing mark in Algebra 2 in HS. I got an F. I went C, D, F, C. Luckily my two C's pulled off a passing grade for the year.
*I proceed to flick off the light, run screaming into a corner, drape a blanket over my head and remain ther, whimpering faintly.*
Yeah, I only got into university after failing maths halfway through high-school (and let us recall that New Zealand has one of the worst examination programs in the western world in that it's ridiculously easy to pass the only compulsory maths tests in the curriculum)because I was given special leave to take tests designed for those with learning disabilities. Specifically, tests designed for young children with learning disabilties. That is to say, mentally retarded ten year olds.
And I still had to take the test more than once!
Sample quote of mine during a debate speech: 'Two-thirds of New Zealanders support this initiative- that's seventy five percent of the population...'
So please understand exactly the depth of my passion when I emphatically say 'Nay maths!'
Puerto Rico I don't particularly have an opinion on (the game, not the island. I'm sure that's very nice. Er. Yes. Actually, I haven't played the game. Nor have I been to Puerto Rico, so I'm about even.) but I love dark chocolate.
Er... we must find neutrality somewhere... have you read Dune?
Well, it's not a difficult show to stage, and it's fun so that means that stagings of it tend to be full of energy. So can I enjoy watching Grease, yes...
Do I think it's a particularly good musical? No. There's only one character with any proper development (Rizzo) and that development is never properly resolved. This means that Grease consigns itself to the Rodgers & Hammerstein school of 'you can watch once or twice to enjoy the choreography, but it ain't something you'd choose over Les Miserables.'
Yay! Maths! We're currently doing an entire term on eigenvalues/eigenvectors, and they're actually pretty cool. I never thought I'd find an entire term on one topic not boring.

Advanced math and me just don't get along.

on 2007-10-05 02:08 am (UTC)I failed a year of maths, but the next year I had the single best math teacher in my high school and that pretty much patched me up.
I will accept your hatred for excellent things, mostly because I hate excellent things as well, such as the game Puerto Rico and dark chocolate.

And hell, I'll swap you my dark chocolate for your math tests. :D
