*picks up the needlist she posted this morning*
*studies it for a moment*
*gets a big black sharpie*
*writes in very large letters at the bottom "Computer that works."*
*puts down the list*
Serenity of my heart, my sweet little perfect macbook borked out. Hardcore borked out. BostonDave was helping me scan for updates, routine matinence, yada yada. So she decides that one of the updates isn't working, fine, we'll try again after the reboot. We restart her. She goes onto the grey screen and sits there. For a long time. And for the next ten or twelve restarts, all trying various things.
Long story short, Dave is a wonderful, wonderful man who will be bringing my baby to the mac-doctors for me tomorrow. AND he's letting me borrow an iBook, which doesn't have a built in camera or play DVD's, but besides that, is a sweet little computer. And the keyboard is really comfy. So yeah, silver linings and all that.
I should have Seren back by the end of the week. Still though, with the headdesks and the yarg and the "I was supposed to have a computer full of recockulously good music (want Dresden Dolls, whine!) to play with also: SIMS!" butno.
...Is it *wrong* to fall in love with a computer because of how smooth it is? Seriously, I love my baby to bits, but she's got a hard edge right where my wrists sit when I'm typing, and that hurts.
Soyeah. New computer for the next couple days. Fun. *sighs*
If I wanted to put up with this kind of crap, I would've gotten a dell.

on 2007-11-26 06:13 am (UTC)Supposedly if you let it sit there for an ABSURDLY long time, i'm talking 5+ hours, it finishes booting. Worth a try, anyways.

on 2007-11-26 01:24 pm (UTC)by mac doctors you are talking an apple retail store, (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=%22apple+retail+store%22&near=02138&ie=UTF8&z=9&om=1) right? you're NOT paying out of pocket for third-party support, right? you DID get the applecare protection plan, (http://www.apple.com/support/products/proplan.html) RIGHT??!?!?
to elaborate:
on 2007-11-26 02:34 pm (UTC)running techtool deluxe is really complicated, so stay with me.
1. insert the applecare cd.
2. double-click on the techtool deluxe icon.
there's more, but it's pretty self-explanatory after those first two hurdles.
if that doesn't put things right, what you do then (actually, what you prob'ly should have done waaaaaaay back when at the very first sign of trouble) is you get the disc that came with the computer (it's probably grey and says something like "MacBook Mac OS X Install Disc 1") and the grey and white card from the applecare box with the enrollment number at the top (if you haven't registered online already) and the serial number (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303720) (you'll need to take out the battery since you can't ask the software to tell you what it is any more).
then you call the number (800-275-2273) and you say, hi, i'm kdsorceress, my apple serial number is blah, my applecare number is blah, i've already tried running techtool deluxe off of the applecare cd, I've Been Backing Up Everything Important To Me On A Regular Basis Because That's How I Roll (you have, right?!?), and the machine's still not working. what do i do next?
there's a non-destructive thing you can do with the install disc called an "archive and install (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120)" which is the fix for 99% of apple-software-update-interruptus crashy-crash, but you've paid for the privilege of someone talking you through it so you might as well take advantage of it.
Re: to elaborate:
on 2007-11-26 02:40 pm (UTC)Dave is being awesome and helping greatly with the sorting out of mah baby, and navigating tech support and the like. Which I realize is depriving me of important life skills or whatever, but I can't honestly say I care much.
Andyeah. Stuff.

on 2007-11-26 04:59 pm (UTC)Hey, I resent that remark! Naturally, since my parents both work for Dell, my loyalties are with them; but seriously:
1. I've never had a Dell break on me like this. Never. As far as I can tell, the same goes for my parents. That's a decade of use over probably half a dozen desktops and laptops, without a single total system failure.
2. The difference between a Mac and a PC? When a Mac breaks, it says, "I'm done doin' stuff" and becomes a big ol' paperweight. Time to buy a new one! When a PC breaks, it says, "I'm all broken!" and you say "That's okay, I can fix you," and then you do.
And, yeah. I'm required by law to do that because, technically, Dell has paid for everything I've ever owned, up to and including my Dell computer. :p
