This entry is just a stream of consciousness over a couple hours as I set up my new laptop.

Her name will be Galadriel George Aushalten. Named for two women named after other people --I'm not actually going to call her El, I'll probably call her Driel. Aushalten means "endure".

We're downloading some Linux to put on her. Later we have to figure out stickers, but that's a long time from now. She has a little lens that doesn't cover up right next to the one that does, so I'm gonna have to figure that one out --is it a lens? An eyeball scanner? Something else?

Anyways, this is my live screaming file as I do all of this.

Step 1: Decide what OS. Austin recommends regular-type Ubuntu (as opposed to xubuntu specifically). This is great! His recommendation gets a _lot_ of weight, because he is my tech support for when I can't get her to do the fucking thing.

Step 2: Follow instructions on the Ubuntu "how to install" page, which has a lot of very friendly screencaps. I am absolutely a-okay with very friendly screencaps and websites that assume I'm a complete idiot.

Step 3: Case in point, I can run "sudo apt install ./balena-etcher_******_amd64.deb" in terminal, and even replace the astrisks with the correct version number, but it took some ACTUAL FURTHER SEARCHING to understand that it wouldn't work until I downloaded the deb file from Github. (See "alternate method", I couldn't figure out how the other one worked, but I know I can normally do .debs no problem because that's how I get Discord to update)

Step 4: Briefly put keyoard out of reach because I decided listening to music was an important part of H4CK1NG!!!!!111!!one!! and so I am listening to a two part mix off CDs that were almost entirely unlabeled, which is _obviously_ the most 1337 way of doing it. I am very cool.

(They were labeled "Thorn's Mix Pt 1" and pt 2, and they are almost definitely gifts from Alys's girl scout camp friend to her, from a very similar era of the mysterious one of my own I found, judgeing by the fact that it also had a Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog song on there.)

Anyways, real step 4: I need to plug in my USB key and I only have two USB ports, so that's music and USB not music and keyoard. I'll be back on to scream minus certain letters soon if things go real bad!

Okay, Step 4 went well! Flashing _took_ a while, but it wasn't a problem! Now step 5: Install on the new computer. This is where everything tends to go pear-shaped for me (IT WAS WEEKS LAST TIME.) so we'll have fun!

I'm trying to decide if I have to go through the obligatory Windows set up or not. How many times can I restart a laptop? We're up to about three! (four or five, and I finally managed to hit Enter fast enough to interrupt startup. Alright! Onwards!)

OKAY! We can find the USB key! Good! We can select it! Good! We get "Secure Boot Violation Invalid signature detected. Check Secure Boot Policy in Setup." So....let's go try that. I guess.

Ah and hitting esc out of the f12 "boot from temporary device" thing just gets me back into the normal startup sequence, and not back to the menu, great, cool. RESTART SIX!

(Look, I don't like any more than you do that I definitely have A Gremlin attached to me.)

Okay! Time to enter setup! Here's a lot of stuff that's probably dangerous as hell for me to fuck with! HELL YEAH! Well....there's something labeled "Secure Boot" and it's "on", so what happens if we just try again hitting "off" this time? And there's a restart button right there! Hopefully that will save me some button pressing?

Let's try again! OOOOOOOO okay we get somethign that looks a lot more familiar! GNU GRUB version 2.12! Try or Install Ubuntu! That is what I want, let's GOOOO!

hahahah fuck did it just...give me a terminal. This no longer looks like the user friendly screencaps! Oh thank fuck, actual graphics. Now it's the same Lenovo startup screen, but it says "Ubuntu" at the bottom. How hopeful! And it is thinking _hard_. Please don't freeze on me (1408). Eyyy it didn't! We're back to the thing that has the screencaps! Fuck yeah!

I am realizing I didn't timestamp this whole process, BUT I started Thorn'sMixPt1 at approximately the start of this process, so...that. I am that long. (We're up to track 24)

STEP 6 (I think six?) Do you want an interactive install, or a smart-person install? WELL THAT ANSWER IS CLEAR, GIVE ME THE MORON VERSION BLESS! Oooo and "do you want just the essentials or bonus apps" can I find out what the bonus apps are before I approve? Okay kinda? And it mostly appears to be stuff that I want, or won't be mad about having, so that's fine, extended it is.

...is this KaramelDanzen? Shazaaaaammmm I need you?! Sorry, "Caramelldansen" and also yes. We're up to track 1 on ThornMixPt2 FWIW, and it's so fucking funny listening to this CD that is 100% made by all the cool emo anime nerds who I hung out with in school but wasn't specifically one of myself because I was a slightly different kind of nerd.

It's cool that Ubuntu comes with no proprietary software by default, and also cool that it straight up says "yeah, do you want to download the shit for your graphics card? You probably do." in the installer.

Okay, a genuine question: Do I want Ubuntu to be the only OS on this computer? Which like.........how much have I tried to use Windows on Kel? Is it zero? I think it's zero! So yeah, let's go ahead and do that, and if I ever _have_ to use Windows, no I don't, and I have my work laptop.

OHGOSH CREATING ACCOUNT YEAHHHH!!!!!! I'm probably gonna post this entry so not posting any of the info here, but yeah, let's go dump that in the usual place!

Time for the honestly-more-snarky than I intend to be thing where I change my time zone from "New York" to "Boston"? Or is it opsec-ier to leave it NYC? HM.

Oh! More stuff that I wanna copy down just in case:
Disk Setup: Erase disk and install Ubuntu
Installation disk: nvme0n1 (Just reading this string made me twitch, I have had such a pain in the ass problem with these kinds of disks in the past)
Applications: Extended selection
Disk encryption: none (I don't know what this means and I don't remember getting a question about it? Feels like maybe a future problem)
Proprietary Software: Codecs & Drivers
Partition nvme0n1p1 formatted as fat32 used for /boot/efi
Partition nvme0n1p2 formatted as ext4 used for /
SOUNDS GOOD LET'S HIT INSTALL!

"sit back and enjoy the slideshow" I will not, thanks. It's telling me helpful things like "you can download Spotify!" (I won't) and "you can develop some OS stuff!" (I really won't). Okay, it is now advertising "great for gaming" and telling me I can get steam and Discord, and to be fair, those are the only two of the sixteen apps so far. Firefox and Bitwarden I guess (/20). LibreOffice, sure. (/24). 27 apps advertised and I would like five of them. This is why I didn't enjoy your slideshow.

Step 7 or something: I'm nearly done! Remove the installation medium and hit "enter". Okay! Let's try this and see what happens!

Holy fuck I appear to have a computer! Huh! Cool! What next? Download a bunch of apps, start trying to actually use her, apparently?! WAIT NO. FIRST PRIORITY IS TO MAKE THE MOUSE FUCKING SCROLL THE CORRECT DIRECTION. AND TURN OFF FUCKING TAPCLICK. Okay, now I can do literally everything else, both of these were killing me during the fucking setup.

Stuff to work on in the future:
Can I name my Workspaces? I kinda liked that feature of xubuntu
Gotta update desktop images, in four fucking years I never did that for Kel, and that is a _flaw_ and I should not do that again, Dree deserves better.

Okay! I successfully have a second computer! This has....never actually happened to me before, it's always been a lot of having the one computer fall completely to pieces and then getting a new computer a few months later? Anyways, this entry is like 1400 words, going to cap it here. BYEEEE!

Could the other lens be an ambient light sensor for brightness adjustments?

I was reading this entry, and visualizing it as an XKCD-styled flow chart...
