Tuesday and I went to Providence to see Rhys Darby perform!
There are other parts of this plan, and in fact we're going to get on a train tomorrow and go very far away. But this was a last minute addition and quite a good one it turned out!
Rhys's comedy is amazingly physical and wholly delightful to watch. I basically only know the man from two things: OurFlagMeansDeath and Infinity Train. So it was neat to get to see a bit more of what he does, and the set was a lot of fun!
He does sound effects just flawlessly, and has an excellent sense of mime to boot. It's really lovely to look at his movement -first of all because the man is all over the place and I love that wild energy. But secondly because he really knows how to use his body to flawless effect and it's joyous to see him be so talentedly silly. He reminds me a bit of Gamorjabot, as that pinnicle of simple silly stupid jokes done impeccably well
(the amount of money I would pay to watch him and Weird Al hang out on a stage together is...pretty high. I don't exactly know what kind of show they'd put on, but damn would it be enjoyable!)
Tues and I were in the nosebleed seats, which turned out quite fine, since there were several empty rows behind us and so we could move around a few times for optimal viewing unimpeded by other fans.
The biggest flaw with the venue was the sound balance -way too loud! I was pleased to remember I had some old earplugs in my purse, since otherwise I would've been watching the entire show with my fingers stuffed in my ears
The audience vibe was good. The jokes were mostly inoffensive, although there were some definitely...pointed remarks about various streaming services sucking rocks. I am interested to know if the original script for this show involved any OFMD jokes --he very carefully avoided naming it at any point, because he ain't no scab
I liked that the overall theme of the show seemed to be "be yourself and have fun in your own head, telling yourself your own stories and being silly"
Also be a Big Brave Boy, that came up a couple times
ALSO I love how much he loves himself. Like, a lot of the set was Kinda Vain or over-the-top-egocentric (the entire first bit was about how his ass is so firm and strong he can clench upon the hands of pickpockets and capture them forever) and like...I am supremely here for that kind of comedy? I don't think I realized how refreshing it is to hear a comic joking about how much they like themself, as opposed to hate.
(I mean, I also go for self-deptecating humour with the worst of them some days, but I'm pretty sure it's bad for the brainpan to indulge that. You are what you think, and if you set up the negative pathways first, it's not gonna be as keen overall as if you do the positive ones)
Anyways, Rhys was a lot of fun, go ahead and see his show if you can, obviously he's too big for it now but write Paul Williams and beg him to invite Rhys to Taskmaster EnZed.
