Tuesday and I just watched 10 Things I Hate About You!

That sorta makes this month "watch Heath Ledger movies that are kinda gayer than I remember" month, since I watched A Knight's Tale on the plane to Seattle a couple weeks ago. It's sad and all that he died as he was reaching such amazing critical acclaim in his career, but honestly, once he passed out of the "teen hearthrob in happily-ever-after sleepover-canon movies" I kinda wasn't tracking his stuff anyways.

(obviously at some point I should watch Brokeback Mountain, just to continue the theme.)

Anyways, 10Things is less gay than KnightsTale (A movie which, I am convinced, is about a polycule helping their boyfriend pretend to be straight), and there were a couple big oof moments leftover from the end of the nineties ("bitch" appearing repeatedly is still sadly normal, but "retard" was an unfortunate surprise) but it remains an absolute exemplar of the Sleepover-Canon genre.

("Sleepover Canon" is Alys's name for one of my favourite genres of movie, which is to say, movies one watches at sleepovers with your friends. Tues and I might be about to watch my absolute favourite example (Easy A) but there are a lot in there I absolutely love. Legally Blonde is amazing, Clueless is still a weirdly hit classic with the kids these days, and Mean Girls is _deeply_ quotable.)

Mostly watching it made me think fond and nostalgic thoughts about hanging out with Veronica. There are certain lines in 10Things that I am just obnoxiously compelled to quote as they come up. The bit about whelmed. The upbeat "we're screwed!" And of course, "oh baby, oh baby".

Mostly at this point in my life, oh gods, every single person in this movie is a tiny baby. Which like...yes obviously. But dang, their problems and reactions are _so immature_ probably. There's a lot of rolling my eyes that gets mollified by remembering that Bianca is only like fifteen years old.

The fact that there's a Katarina in this movie remains of deep personal importance to me. I've written about her before. She is sharp and smart and unbelievably self-assured and Way Too Cool For This Shit. And she loves her little sister, even when she wants to scream at her constantly and get into huge arguments.

It's just...it's nice to watch stuff that is simple and fluffy and snappy and happily ever after. That's the point of Sleepover Canon, after all! And of course, watching it as a grown-ass queer, I can keep the slash-goggles firmly on and enjoy the bits and pieces where various male actors gaze a little too close at each other.

Anyways, time to go watch Easy A for the second time in three weeks (this is a very good record and I would happily maintain it for the rest of time.) Keep being awesome, y'all!

I think I still haven't seen Mean Girls, and would enjoy watching it with you at some point. <3
