Come to Dreamwidth, we've got Lions!
Dec. 5th, 2018 10:30 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Okay, Facefriends and Tumblebuddies, here's the skinny:
Tumblr is killing itself, dramatically and stupidly. They're apparently hemorrhaging senior staff, the ads are getting worse and more, and of course, they have decided to lean full tilt into the Pornpocalypse[1] while not doing a thing about the damn nazis. Classy, Tumblr! I'm so glad you have decided to bow to corporate pressure and unilaterally say all sex is Bad And Naughty And Wicked For Everyone.
This is a pretty terrible take, and yeah, this is a big part of why I'm just not really gonna Tumble as much anymore. But! There's another reason my social media time has been shifting, and it's not just because seriously, nazis everywhere what is with 2018!
I've actually started to return to long-form personal blogging! Viva la Dreamwidth, baby!
The most important step has more or less been completed: I am officially back to reading my DW flist, which to be perfectly honest, I had not been doing regularly before since...ever. When did LJ die again? Yeah, that's the last time I was regularly reading longform posts.
The second most important step is to start Creating Content. Why would I want to do that? Because Dreamwidth is everything you want in a social media network, and more posts from me means more engagement from everyone means happily ever after.
SO HERE'S THE SPIEL:
You should be on Dreamwidth! Dreamwidth is doing several things you really like, such as:
*Posts on your reading page are chronological!
*Separates the concepts of "I want to follow this person" and "I want to show this person private content"
*GRANULAR POSTING FILTERS, OKAY?! Gods have I missed the ability to have choices more than "anyone in the world" and "the random list of people I've friended over time some of whom I've forgotten about". My Addresspost filter? More restrictive than my sexfilter, but less restrictive than my therapyfilter (where I talk heavy about rape).
*Speaking of sex, they are not randomly destroying anything that has the ess-ee-echs word in it
*Threaded comments. PROPERLY threaded comments, with MORE THAN ONE LEVEL OF THREADING. WHY IS THIS SO HARD FOR YOU INTERNET? WHY. WHY IS _REDDIT_ THE ONLY OTHER PLACE THAT HAS MANAGED TO SORT THIS OUT?
*I had forgotten how much I like being able to change my icon for different posts/moods
*Functional tags? Tumblr might be edging them out there, honestly --depends on if DW has a finite number of tags you can use, like elljay did (approx 1000, of course I hit it). But still, tags! Tag yo shit! Yay!
*No "like" button. Look, I know people get use out of these things, and lord knows I spam them like crazy myself, but wow the disappointment is real every time I see I've got ten notifications on Twitter and then only one of them is actually a reply. Comments over likes, any day of the week.
*Screened comments! Screened comments are gr9! Oh, and the ability to turn off comments on an individual post-by-post basis! Wanna post something cryptic or sad and *not* have people engage? You can do that! Your fave would never.
*NO ADS, MY FRIENDS! ENTIRELY USER SUPPORTED! Look, if you aren't buying the product then you are the product and I'm gonna start paying for DW I feel that serious about it. In retrospect, I feel weirdly suspicious that Twitter and Tumblebutts and Faceface don't have payment options to help subsidize costs --ads, I know, but when you paid for LJ the ads went away, for instance, and that doesn't seem to be something you can do with any of the other places. But yeah, DW is ad-free, thankyouverymuch
*Communities! I will admit to not being very communitish these days, but I could easily become so, and I am happy for that.
I'm going to leave off there, because this post is plenty long enough, but seriously, if you're thinking about an exodus, and confused where to start, do I have the place for you. I've a blog[2] with over a decade and a half of posts (god I love DW's import tool) and still going.

MOOP!
[1] This is a term coined by Bacchus, of ErosBlog, which is the best sex blog on the internet except *maybe* the Rialto Report. He has been posting frequent updates about the Tumblr Dumbassery, so be sure to poke your nose in!
[2] My blog name is the same as my Tumblr and Twitter handles. Are you on Facebook and don't know that handle? Good, I've done something right. (DM me for more)
