Ten years ago yesterday, I showed up at Marc's doorstep with a broken hard drive and plaintively asked "distract me?" It's the best breakdown decision I've ever made in my life --he took me with him to the weekly Cambridge Class of the Boston Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society.

Ten years ago yesterday, I received my first lesson in Scottish Country Dance, from a big tall Scotsman with broad shoulders and a blue kilt. Thank you Brucie! I probably would've continued on regardless, but it did seem so delightfully official to have the Scottish brogue saying "meanwhil_st_" as the dancers did their moves.

Ten years ago yesterday, I learned...I have no idea what I learned, honestly. Probably a bit of skip change, a bit of pas de basque, maybe a dance or two. I know I sat out a lot of the dances, but I was probably dragged onto the floor by Meyer at least once, and certainly I would've danced with Marc.

(If nothing else, Marc and I would've waltzed together. A good two thirds of my competence at waltz is directly connected to two-three years of waltzing with him at the end of Monday nights.)

Ten years ago yesterday, I started down this amazing path that has found me friends and partners and family and so much utter thorough happiness. It is a joyful thing, this dance I do, with joyful people. Ten years ago yesterday was the first opportunity I had to meet so many of my close friends --hi jere7my, hi Alex, hi Beth and Cathy and Laura and Stephen and Triona and Val. (Yes I know I met most of these ones later than that first time. But I wouldn't have ever gotten to them if I hadn't started.)

Tonight I was able to do six of the dances (this is a lot, for me right now --the stress of making lesson plans means more often than not I don't even put on my shoes, but I needed to be able to dance tonight). My footwork is nice and my figures are nice and I smiled so much, because it's such a wonderful hobby. It gave me the framework I needed to do contra and better vintage and English Country and squares and pick up all the different folky things I do.

In sixty more years I'll have been dancing almost as long as the oldest dancers I know --I look forward to reaching that milestone, one decade at a time.

Happy anniversary to me.
