Skyrim

So I have been playing an awful1 lot of Skyrim!

See, it all started when we moved in, in that early portion where we had almost none of our stuff located in our actual house. One thing we did have was the TV and the Xbox (because we're geeks, and wanted to hook it up to YouTube and Netflix and have background noise.) And it turned out that we had exactly one game disk, the one that had been in there at the time.

Oh look, says I, foolishly. This is Skyrim! I remember playing a little bit of Skyrim at mek's house last couple times I visited, and I quite enjoy it. Maybe I should play again.

I have been thoroughly enjoying myself.

My character is named Sorky, because that's my default name for rpg style games like this (and also for Kobolds Ate My Baby). She is a Kajhiit, which I originally chose on the basis of aesthetics and not wanting to play a human3, with dark fur and very green eyes. Later, I discovered that Kajhiiti can see in the dark, which is a fantastic benefit, and completely makes up for all the NPCs who call me "cat" or threaten to turn me into a rug.

Her class, as I have determined it, is Grade A Coward. Her character has slowly been forming itself over the course of my playing, but the cowardice came out quickly and strongly, and as soon as I realized the benefits to the playing style, I embraced it wholeheartedly. To wit, her two strongest skills are Sneak (92 at the time of this writing --I believe you stop gaining levels in a skill at 100.) and Archery. What this translates to is quietly round a corner, shoot the badguy, hide, round the corner, shoot the badguy, hide, etc etc etc until all the badguys are dead. It's a beautiful way to play.

As with any character I play in Skyrim, she is a Big Damn Bibliophile, to the point where I really quite need to go get a list of all the books in Skyrim from somewhere on the internet and do some checking so that I can stop picking up everything. She's also a little bit of a packrat, but she has a very nice little house in Whiterun where she can keep things.

Dissimilar to my previous forays, this character is also an unrepentant Dwemmer fetishist. She cannot get enough dwarf stuff, and when I try to tell her that she really doesn't need more Dwemmer Bowls, she growls at me. She just found that there's a city built on top of an old Dwemmer hold and she is about to spend all her time looting.

She is not what you would call a joiner. At the point when she was given Lydia by the Whiterun Jarl, she thought this might work out well, but within about half an hour, Lydia had been killed by some Falmer and Sorky's never really bothered to find another flunky. Additionally, she is not a stormcloak (ugh, fuggin racist Nords) and not a member of the Imperial Legion (boring stodgy soldierdom is not for her). She gets along well with the Companions though, and may someday investigate the Dawnguard, mostly because vampires randomly attack her sometimes and she cannot abide that.

(She hates the Dark Brotherhood for the same reason. She doesn't even know why the Dark Brotherhood is sending assassins after her occasionally, and finds it very annoying.)

I'm having loads and loads of fun with her. She's a very rough morality --basically happy to kill pretty much anything as long as it attacks her first-- but she also makes a point of giving to the poor and not stealing from hunters or fishermen or Kajhit. Jarls and Inns are fair game though, and her sneakiness lets her nab _everything_. I haven't gotten her much into pickpocketing yet (mostly she wants to keep her bounty low, and that's not a good way to do it) but it'll probably happen eventually, especially since she's been taking lessons from an old begger up in Windhelm.

So yeah! Chaotic Neutral cat-person who shoots things with a bow and arrow or cuts them down with some sort of battle axe.

And that is more than enough pointless wankery, okay, thank you for reading, bye.

MOOP!

1: It is Sparr's fault that I use this word accurately, although I don't actually think it applies here. I am enjoying myself, you see, and fun is very rarely awful. When I get stuck in loops and play four straight hours of minesweeper2, I don't get anything out of it --that's atrocious. But I do enjoy Skyrim, and I am getting lots of enjoyment out of it. But I am also spending time on it that I could be spending elseways.

2: See also "Ways In Which Sorcy's Brain Is Broken" or "No, I Am Not Exaggerating For Comedic Effect".

3: It's just a very small bit of fighting the kyriarchy, but when given the option, I do like trying to intentionally choose a character as far away from "straight white human male" as possible.

Rtizy got me playing Morrowind for a while and I haven't gotten back to it mainly because I can only play it on my laptop and that screen is really too small for me to get properly immersed. oslt.

That said, my character on that is an elf but it's been so long I can't remember anything else about her... I haven't gotten very far but the one thing I do remember is that I have fiftyeleven wee quests to do there and I kept getting more and more sidetrackt from the original one I had started out with ;D

A bosmer archer, if I'm remembering right! I think you had a focus in magic, too.

I always find it hard to get back in to Morrowind after a long while of not playing. Usually I end up making a new character.

Oh, that's right! I should have remembered that from all the snarky remarks I kept getting from the npcs... I was just getting to the point where I could actually shoot things with my bow too...

Andyar, I was thinking when responding up there that at this point, I'd probly have to make a new character when I get back to it (you see that "when" I said there instead of "if" :D)!

I'm sure you'd have an easier time making a character now that you have some idea of how the skills work, too

Oh god, minesweeper -- I knew I had crossed a line when I discovered myself getting distracted and glancing away for seconds at a time and playing using my peripheral vision. That's really not a good sign.

I think you should babble about Skyrim more. I don't think I know anyone else who has played Skyrim but not the other Elder Scrolls, and I find this to be an interesting perspective.

Now I'm wondering how your characters and my characters would get along. I can tell you right off that Urard gro-Aruk, my orc warrior, would not get along with Sorky because sneaking and archery are a coward's skills (which, obviously, you already know.)
I think Throws Fire would -think- they got on okay, but he might drive Sorky batty. He's an argonian mage, obviously.

Dar'Ivqei, I really can't decide on. They might do okay, as they have similar opinions on skills, but Ivqei is -such- an asshole... It's a tricky one. I'll have to play some more Skyrim and think about it.

There's nothing wrong with using "awful" to mean "exceedingly great" --- language changes, etymology isn't destiny, and it's been used in this sense by the best writers for 200+ years: see the usage note at http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/awful
