sorcyress: Drawing of me as a pirate, standing in front of the Boston Citgo sign (Glitch thinking)

So, politics class today was wicked easy, and it was done in such a way that it was trivial to both take notes and do something else. So I wound up doing some worldbuilding for a webcomic I may draw someday.

This particular comic is called "Aural Sex", because I love the phrase, and the main character is a little bit of an audiophile. It's fairly unlikely that I'll never actually write any stories for it and turn it into a comic, but I keep wanting to start doing a serious1 comic, just so I can help my art improve by leaps and bounds.

And, I mean, Sylvie wandered into my head just before spring break and hasn't bothered to leave. A lot of what this comic is meant to be is me learning how to consistently draw individual characters, and not just have everyone look the same with slightly different clothes and hair.

So, today I wound up doodling a bunch, and came up with some other characters to share the same worldspace as Sylvie. She now has the name of a best friend (Ssica, she got tired of being called Jess), although the girl stubbornly refuses to be drawn, an ex-boyfriend (Gus), his little sister (Wiloughby, and yes I know that's a horrible name, but that's what she insists it is --she hates being called Wil, too.), and the boy that Wil has a crush on, who has a crush on Sylvie, and who is Gus's best friend. (Charles.)

What I especially like is both that they all look different and I've established some of these basic differences (Sylvie's got narrower eyes than any of the rest of them, and a sharp nose, Gus and Wil both have noses that turn up and very long eyes --kinda hard to explain without tossing in .gifs of my drawings style-- Charles's nose is very round (different for me, I don't usually do round noses) and he's got freckles

Oh, and Gus'll have a mohawk if I can make it cooperate. This is very vaguely unlikely, but we'll see.

I can babble way more about some of the preliminary relationship ideas between the characters, but I think I'll skip that for now, since I have class very soon.

Butyeah, worldbuilding. Unfortunately, a lot of this worldbuilding is going to be music building, I think, just to have random things for them to reference ocassionally. I really don't want the music to be the focus of the comic (ie, Questionable Content) so I'm pretty sure I'll just be making up all the bands, using names that I've slowly been accumulating over the years.

That's okay, I do that a lot. And I mean, if I desperately want someone to enjoy a reallife band, like, say, Panic! At the Disco, I can always arbitrarily decide that, in this universe, the niche provided by P!atD is filled by the band Raptors! in the Ballroom. Or something.

ATANYRATE, what I'm really looking for here are some random fictional bands that I can use. If you have a fictional band that you don't mind me stealing and possibly making up arbitrary facts about ('Red Spiders' are saving up all their money earned in order to give the first ever performance on the moon!) toss it into the comments, along with a quick note on what sort of music they play / what band we're ripping off here.

Yeah. Thanks!

My band name for all my characters is Alpha Omega... their musical style is late 70's early 80's Chicago.

Never forget the greatest band ever: 5 Clams and a Tire Pump.

And of course the band that I was in in college with Immie, Rigel and Ed Moser was called Rosewater. Our biggest hit was Moth Aflame.

Love,
your,
Mom

Fancy Bandits - Wunderbread equivalent of Orange Avenue (http://www.orangeavenuemusic.com/); ask me if you want some music samples, I have their debut CD. They play a lot of awesome old popular rock plus they kinda sound like a rock/garageband version of Rascal Flatts. Also, Fancy Bandits wear fancy-patterned bandannas to all their concerts (don't ask, I didn't). Based, w/ band permission, off the band I play tambourine/aux.percussion for (our singer and guitarist are twin aussie boys!)

The only thing that comes to mind from me is mostly just a name, Giovanni Gitanos, who is not a band, but a musician, gypsy swing/flamenco guitar player. It is not his real name, Gitanos is the name of the Gypsies usually found in spain. I suppose you could say he would be the parallel to this universe' Django Reinhardt.

Detail-wise... we have a female drummer who likes to dress like a fairy and is a perky goth. The lead guitar doesn't look like he belongs in a rock band, and always look like he's trying to hard to fit the role. ;-)

[livejournal.com profile] madplanet has a fictional band called "Hard-on for Canada" (She's an old-timey Sluggyboard type)

I think there are even 'tour reports' in her LJ about 6-8 months ago or so... They might be f-locked, though.

Want to drop her a line?

One day at lunch back in high school my friends got to talking about how band names often have a certain rhythm. And based on that criteria alone we came up with "Down by Half" and "Acid Green." I picture Down by Half as standard rock, 2/3 bouncy 1/3 angsty. Acid Green would be funkier with maybe a touch of techno and a punkier look. Both bands would be made up of five girls in their upper teens/lower twenties.

"Hoopy Froods" They play Silence.
"Gesundheit" They play Extreme Techno.

They share many of the same musicians.
Often, one will open for the other.

The techs hate them - ever try to mike a Silence? Also, Gesundheit tends to blow speakers and sometimes other equipment.

"Hoopy Froods" is actually one of the noisier (perhaps the noisiest) Silence bands around. Their compositions often include elements such as crickets and the hum of cars on a distant highway. One shocking piece features a hoot owl.

Velociraptor Necromancer is a nerdrock band (think XKCD's brand of whimsy and humanism, but less tech and more fantasy). Not really based on any real bands, though.

Angry Butterfly is a band that does Pink Floyd like music.

The Agatha People is a garage band that does death metal about happy things like kittens and rainbows.
