I am in Maryland0, filling my heart with nostalgia!
No seriously, I spent today at girl scout day camp, a thing that I have not done since before any of the current campers were born. Seriously, my last year was 2011, and 12-year-olds are PATs, not campers. I hadn't really been planning to attend, but turns out shed needed hands and I am a competent and intelligent human being who knows camp well and so there I was!
It was actually really great! I ate a snow cone! I got thrown into leading some songs with the girls!1 I carried a great many boxen and things! I got stuck in the pouring torrential rain (and _obviously_ I sung Thunderation2 but I want it to be officially noted and known that I _did not_ do so until after it was already a storm)! I stole a camp shirt, although I did so too late for anyone to sign it. I did sign shirts and I pleased myself by remembering, with the very first signature, how I do so (and probably where? I'm not positive that I've "always" signed right above my mother's signature, but that really ~felt right~).
Most importantly, I feel like I managed to be an actually helpful/useful/net positive input for the shedmaster, who is relatively new, very competent, and utterly overwhelmed by having two full-time camp jobs absorbed into one this year3. She even apparently found mom and told mom that I was thus as well, so chalk one up for being Useful as a life skill. I've still got it, baby.
We came home and I got dry and then it was time for evening social. I saw Aunt Sara and Cousin JGrey! I saw Veronica! I saw Joshbro! So many family!!!! It was really lovely! We played some short board games (I taught V cat-in-the-box, and lost horribly) and chatted a lot and ate pizza and completely forgot to cook the corn on the cob, so there's a strong chance that'll be brought back up to Boston.
(The fact that we are _driving_ to Boston is very good and very dangerous, because I can just...obtain...things from the house that would be too much of a pain in the ass to ship otherwise. I did not realize I could bring White Bear4 home, and so I am officially not doing so _yet_ but I will be doing so in a year's time, when we drive to ESCape next year. So I have that long to get my room into an organization where he will fit into it.)
As everyone else trickled out, we wound up finding some old home movies and embarrassing me in front of Tuesday with them. I saw a friend at day camp I haven't seen in years and years, and damn, Mica looks exactly the same as she always has. She said of me "oh you look the same too" but then we look at these videos from my senior year of high school or college and no, I have changed face some.
Seeing us bridging from PA to Adult in the way back when, and looking on the video at how I clung to Veronica's arm? That has not changed, not at all.
So Maryland is good, and I am unbelievably happy that my parents live back here now, for so many reasons. I get to see so much more of my family when I go to see my family, and it is wonderful!

0) Tuesday and I took the train down here on Weds, and we've been having a very nice time hanging out with my parents and doing too many other things at once.
1) It suddenly occurs to me that "lead a song on very little notice in front of 150 people, many of them literal children" is probably not on the ability list of most people. For social anxiety reasons, and for "ability to identify and sing an appropriate camp song" reasons and for charisma reasons. I frequently fall back on the line "I am very good at what I do" as a way of accepting-and-semi-deflecting compliments, but no really, this is what I do.
2: Maybe my favourite camp song? "Thunder thunder, thunderation / we are the girl scouts association / when we sing with determination / we create a [clap] sensation". Obviously it summons thunderstorms.
3: There used to be a separate quartermaster department in charge of all the food for cooking day, and there isn't anymore. It's two shedmaster adults and some PAs doing work that was formerly done by like...four total adults and a bunch of PAs.
4: White Bear is my teddy bear, he is the stuffed animal I've had the longest, he is no longer as large as I am but he is still very large and I love him very dearly and deeply.
