Some exciting stuff from Arisia:

*I gave blood! I am always very _very_ happy when I am able to give blood (often my iron is too low, always I am ADHD and distractible and don't remember that this is a thing I can regularly do). I just...like everything about it, I like that it's a genuinely good act that will actually help real people and I also like that they give you cookies and juice and attention and sometimes other cool stuff and you don't feel guilty at all because you literally just paid in blood. The pain is not that bad at all (and maybe has gotten less than it used to be even?) and I got to talk with mom the whole time, and it was great!

*MOM AND BARB AND NEVA HAD A SECRET COSTUMING PLAN WHICH WAS TO DRESS LIKE ME! Honestly, I am _over the moon_ about it! I knew mom had a secret costuming plan which would debut at Arisia, but I never for an instance thought it would be this. I was waiting for them for English dance and saw them coming down the escalator and what I said was "Hey mom...what's your costu...YOUR COSTUME IS ME!"

Orange and green and pumpkin witchy and Very Good Hats and AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!

It pleases me especially because a) my mom is a huge dork for costuming details and she really went for it (she included a Senator Lemonsnout plushie! Like what even!!) and b) for a long time I didn't really think of myself as having a particularly well defined "style" and it's exceptionally pleasing to be able to look at a group of people and think "oh yes I do, it's this!"

*Immediately prior to getting to see that fabulosity, I spent a bunch of time on stilts, including a photoshoot with another person who looks a lot like me, Tashari! We've decided that it's not that we look like each other, it's that we're the palette swapped versions of each other --she's blues and purples, I'm greens and oranges! And she was on her stilts the same time I was on mine, and we got some pictures from the con photog including us being doofuses with our hair, and that was a lot of fun to do!

*Stiltsing in general was really really fun, and there was a lot of it --over an hour! I did this about two hours giving blood, which was enough time to wait to not at all be dangerous of myself but also still be a little goofy and silly. I got to see lots of friends, and do a couple bouts of "let me answer all the questions of an interested party and reassure them when they apologize that no I _love_ teaching please let me"

*I went to House of Toast party with jere7my, which turned out to be an *awesome* room party. This year they had set up in a two-room suite, which let them have the toast room (very regimented line, delicious) and a side room where you could sit and chill and chat with people. We wound up spending like...an hour plus in that side room, especially because they foolishly let jere7my have the TV remote and we could look up songs about toast. It turns out that we got up to "four" total, but one of them starts with lyrics about "yeah, his mother totally died in childbirth (or PPD)" and another is a country song all "my wife's in the kitchen wearing nothin' but a shirt" and like...turns out songs about toast is not a great genre.

But the conversation was rollicking, and reminded me that I really want to reread Frankenstein, it was one of the best books I had to read for school.

*I bought math earrings, which will be the base for my eventual Ms. Frizzle-but-math costume/actually wear at work like a nerd outfit. They are deeply dramatic earrings (dangling nearly to shoulders with big operation symbols).

Things are good! I am having a good con, and I am happy, and I really oughten volunteer after a year totally out of the game. For now though I am happy to have a good time and see my friends and have long stretches of time where I can just fuck around with few responsibilities.

I hope you are well!

(herein lies the Sunday post)

Good Arisia Things:

*I did a volunteer! Very sorta I did a voluntold, in that mom was all "so we have absolutely zero stage folx to sit in front of the stage and make sure no one falls off, you wanna?" and I said hell yeah, and so instead of spending the masque next to jere7my squeeing at the costumes, we both spent it on opposite sides of stage front. No one tried to fall off! jere7my got to pass a list from the judges table to the MCs! I got to offer my hand to people going up and down the steps for prizes! I have some volunteering hours and now it seems vaguely feasible that I may earn my badge for next year! (or at least earn a shirt)

*I have so many wonderful attractive friends who it's so fun to just...hang out with and chat a bit! Highlights from today were finally getting to run into BalsamicDragon, who is rocking a *very* dapper new style, and having dinner with spare-dad Belm. Arisia is a good con for "hang out and chat"

*Very short visit to the House of Toast. It was crowded and loud tonight in a way it wasn't last night (not aided by a passel of teenagers crowding in randomly to LOUDLY SQUEE at their friends who were working). But! I had sprinkle-frosting and maple-bacon seasoning and that was quite good.

*The _gorgeous_ steampunk costumer I've been seeing around wearing the African inspired stuff was at the masque. It's her first Arisia, and we wound up chatting a bunch during intermission and that was keen! She does watch city and stuff and says it's a lovely time. It was nice to get to connect with strangers, even if I utterly failed to get such basic information as "her name" or "any form of contact info".

*Late night board games!!! jere7my and I post-masque wanted something to do, and we decided to go see what was up in the board game room. Right outside the room we encountered Anu3bis and Genni and Brendo, and the five of us went in and found something to play. I suggested 7 Wonders, and we hacked together an explanation of the rules, then did the thing! I even won, or, if you follow the rules correctly, was part of a three-way-tie for first!

*After, jere7my and I played versus Genni and Brendo for cribbage. We were _badly_ annihilated, partly because I played dumb and it was jere7my's first time ever, partly because cribbage is a colossally dumb game honestly, despite how utterly compelling it is.

*I wore various cute clothing throughout the day which is Very Important Obviously. Also, I bought a pair of horrifying clip-on earrings from a small things vendor --they have little plastic babies! Hecka yeah!

*I also bought leather leaf hair barrettes because a) pretty! and b) I really like Jessie and want him to keep making his cool stuff.

*Went to the Tom Lehrer sing along panel, where I sat with Squares-friends Melissa and Robert, and sung along with great gusto on the songs I knew (including Elements, hecka yeah!). I also completed another Inktober drawing --I'm still working on it!-- and spent a bunch of time playing dumb phone games which felt really important for my brain, and kinda generally introverty and soothing.

I think that's about it for Sunday of con --very out of order, of course. One more day, with lots more volunteer hours. Going to post this and Saturday all at once right now.

I expect you did not come up with "Don't wanna see no smoke comin' outo' that Toaster" from the 1974 album The Essential Travis, Shook, and the Club Wow. We spent a while searching youtube. We could find another couple of songs from that album, but not the right one. Didn't spend the hours it would take to find it in the house.

Was the African inspired steampunk a tribute to Nisi Shawl's "Everfair?"

Wow, that sounds amazing!

Also, it means you probably missed the email I sent you Saturday night, saying I was going to be in Cambridge 3pm-7pm on Friday the 24th, and any chance you want to meet up for dinner or ice cream in Kendall or something?

It was great seeing you!

I was sad to miss Toast[a] and Masquerade[b] and late-night-ing, but generally had a fabulous time.

- - -

[a] = I stopped by at 10 PM sharp on Friday but they weren't open yet. I forgot on Saturday. And on Sunday, I went to bed at 8 freakin' PM, purely because I am by now old and ?wise? enough to know when to listen to my body yelling messages at me.

[b] = 8 PM. 8 PM!?! Bah.
