So, as I've mentioned to several people in passing, but not in any coherent or organized way, I am volunteering at Splash this weekend. This is stressful and exciting and ridiculous and fun and I am basically having a very good time of things right now.

"What is Splash?" you ask! Good question. Splash is a weekend event hosted at MIT, where MIT students and other random people from around the community (yo!) sign up to teach classes on anything they want.

Then people aged 12-17, homeschool and not, sign up to spend the weekend at MIT, taking these classes. Glancing at the schedule next to me, I see classes on "Greek and Roman Mythology", "Stormy Science", "Social Change Singalong", "How to Bullshit", "Set", "Knit a House Scarf" and "A Very Gentle Introduction to Cancer". I myself am teaching cross-step waltz and origami. I fit in perfectly.

In my down time, rather than harass the small handful of other people I know here (and I do think I can count them on one hand), I have roped myself into doing volunteering things. Because let's face it, I am my mother's daughter, and the best way to meet new people and keep oneself entertained is to volunteer as much as possible, and be as helpful and methodical as you can. I'm pretty good at helpful and methodical.

The whole thing feels like a cross between a sci-fi con and the girl scout Mall Lock-In. This morning, I taught a walk-in seminar on origami, just running through three or four models that were easy and fun to make. No idea how many people I actually had come through, but I'd believe it if I were told the number was fifty --or higher. I think most of the people walked away happy, whether they had been doing their own thing, or following my instructions.

After two hours of that, I scampered off to the teacher's lounge, and grabbed a very quick meal, then rushed upstairs to prepare for my first (of three) classes on Basic Cross-Step Waltz. It went...less well than the other two will go, but not completely bad. I look forward to trying again tomorrow morning, now that I have a better idea of what I'm doing.

When my heart had resumed beating in a regular manner, I went back to the teacher's lounge, which is serving as headquarters for everything, food, and downtime space. I planned on volunteering for security, but the nice gentleman I was going to ask where I go for that was busy looking for someone to run teacher check-in for a few hours. I shrugged and said "sure why not", and now I am here waiting for people to arrive. And for dinner.

I think I've decided that Splash is well worth attending. (Let's face it, I decided that a few weeks ago, before I even went to the teacher-training). Visions of future classes are dancing behind my eyes, maybe a little less waltzing, a little more marshmallow guns...or maybe an intro to SCD, or a walk-in NaNoWriMo party or, or, or!

I'll probably post more tomorrow, after I've had my other three classes. (two more waltz, one more origami). In the meantime, I've got to see about calling the teachers who haven't arrived, and haranguing them until they check in. Huzzah!

What would you want to teach at Splash, Grey? What would be your top three choices?
