I have been reading bits of [personal profile] ratatosk's livejournal lately, with his encouragement. This is partly because he keeps showing me excellent photos and taunting me with the fact that there are proper explanations buried somewhere amongst his 1500 posts, and mostly because he is an excellent writer, and his livejournal is set up in much the same way I want my livejournal to be set up.

Which is to say, when you click on his journal, the top five posts are not things he has written recently, but things that are useful information for people to encounter, if they are encountering his journal for the first time. They include a quick snippet of identifying information (flocked), a post suggesting other posts to read (I am very jealous of this one and wish to copy it), his policy on friending and disseminating posts, and a few other useful things.

I keep some of this basic information in my userinfo, but I've always found it difficult to strike the correct balance between "about me" and silliness and relevant policies. If my userinfo could be nothing but the testimonials page, I would be very happy indeed (and yes, I do regularly update that, whenever I catch someone saying something particularly nice --or accurate-- about me.) Of course, the easiest way to do that is to convert everything else to a handful of top-posts, or one very link-filled top post.

For the moment, you get an okay set of "useful information" is you use the tag permalink, and that may well serve. I should start putting my calendars in there though (I should update my calendar) as well as a few other useful things about who I am and what I do. But I don't actually mention anywhere that that's the way to do it, so I don't know how useful it is, as a tag1.

At any rate, I recommend that you all go read this post of his, which includes the line "Pigeons are an occasional exception because they are round and alluring." and discusses the purposes of various guidebooks for different types of animals. I will probably link some other things in a future sundries, as I keep reading through his various posts and grinning --in addition to good organization, the boy does have a lovely way with words.

MOOP!

1: Similarly useful tags? bestof, which is a motley collection of things I think are good, things I think are interesting, and things I think are controversial, and Past!Sor is Awesome, which is things that make me smile when reading them later, and includes posts that are included for a single line.

Unfortunately, the post you link to seems to be locked. Several of my friends have a "welcome to my journal" post which is dated out of order for something fairly far in the future (one is 2030).
