Every1 girl2 should own a red satin dressing gown.

Seriously, I'm slinking around the room in mine, over my pyjamas --black panties and a black tank top. My hair is in a braid disheveled from sleeping in it. If I had tea to put in my mug, the look would be perfect. And I feel amazing.

I feel confident and sensual and sassy, and it shows, as I glance across to the mirror and smile at my reflection. I am not sexy like a porn star. I am sexy like a pin-up star, and that's just fantastic.

Who cares that I have a cold, six hours of sleep, and an awful3 lot of homework to do? That it's grey and rainy out, and I need to go for food. That I slept alone4 and woke up without even a phantom of a kiss.

I am fucking awesome anyways. Because I'm wearing black underwear and a red satin dressing gown, and that automatically makes everything else stop mattering so much.

What clothing do *you* have that has this effect on you?

MOOP!

1: All generalizations are false.
2: s/girl/person who wants to own such a thing
3: Used intentionally. This footnote is meaningless to almost all of you.
4: Okay, technically words can't express how lovely it is to wake up alone right now. I love you all very very much, but I'm at that level of oversocialed where I don't even realize I'm oversocialed, and it's wearing.

I feel the same joy when I wear my powder-blue housecoat. I don't look slinky and sleek -- I look, in fact, like a stumpy proto-crazy-cat-lady -- but it never fails to make me feel cheerful and optimistic and awesome.

Mine is a pair of black silk pajama pants. I wish I had a silk robe to go with, but they're hard to find in my price range, and I've got a really slinky thin black knit one that's almost as good.

I have a few things like that. Several of them are drag; nearly all of them are tight and sexy (the others are flowy).

I also have a purple silk dressing gown, but it needs a little repair before I can actually wear it, so I haven't really gotten to test its effects yet.

Such a feeling is responsible for my ever-growing collection of little black dresses despite my lack of places to wear them...

i couldn't remember the one shirt that always makes me feel Awesome when i wear it (a thing that i find hugely ironic) however, this one (http://wiki.hypertwins.org/wikiup/f/f1/Hummer_Tank.jpg) comes in second, i think...

...and please, you knew it'd involve green and/or tie-dye, right?? ;D

I react much more to what other people are wearing than what I'm wearing. The only clothing that makes me consciously change behavior generally are either a) my various math shirts (math is cool!) and b) my athletic related shirts (huh? You mean I don't look like what you expect someone to be like who wrestled in high school? Why not?). Even the math things don't actually do much. I use clothing more as a signaling mechanism than anything directed to myself. If for example, I'm at a con, I'm much more likely to wear a math shirt than a nerd shirt. If I'm at a con, you know at a glance that I'm a nerd. A math shirt gives you more data about what type of nerd.

1) I don't actually -own- any silk boxers, but I have had occasion to wear them once or twice (I forget the actual circumstances, and they are far more tame then you lot are thinking. Pervs =P ). It's a slinky soft -nice- feeling.

1b) The same might be said of my occasional times cross-dressing. Skirts + sexy tight underwear and hose/stockings has a nifty aerodynamic quality.

2) I do not do it often, but dressing to the nines, and I mean all out: tailored tuxedo pants and jacket, fitted dress shirt with a vest/waistcoat and tie, comfortable dress shoes. My parents sometimes take me to events that require me to do this, plus I've found a few swanky establishments where the dress code is called for. There's nothing quite like dressing up classy to feel confident and polished.

3) Some outfits drop me into personas, the most obvious being my rene garb.

4) Some outfits are reactive, based on an awesome mood. My favorite example is a particular screaming pink T-shirt I own, which is only worn if I'm feeling just that On Top of The World and Why Yes, my shirt IS Pink.

A decent suit and tie.

In general, feeling appropriately dressed makes me feel good. If it's raining and I'm wearing waterproof light hiking boots, travel pants and shirt, and a motorcycle jacket, it's good. If it's freezing cold, my silly Russian fur hat. If I'm in New York and not on business, all black with a leather jacket or army jacket. If I'm at certain parties, black jeans, black leather boots with a bit of metal on them, a frilly gothy shirt. It doesn't make things stop mattering entirely, but it does help.

My fuzzy bathrobe. It's some sort of polar fleece/velour-like fabric, bought cheap at some big box store. It's nothing at all special in and of itself, other than being extremely comfy... but the key aspect of it isn't what it is or how it feels, but what it signifies. Most days I'm rushing off somewhere (work, errands, social, etc), and usually I roll out of bed with barely time for a shower and a cup of tea before heading out, so even on chilly mornings donning and doffing a robe is an easily skipped step when rushing around. Even on days when I'm around the house, getting dressed (for me, anyway) is absolutely key to starting and staying motivated through the day. *So*, wearing a comfy bathrobe has all sorts of connotations of not being in a hurry, of relaxing, of savoring a bit of calm. At least for that moment, I'm in the eye of the storm and already looking forward to taking on whatever happens next.
