So, my phone is borked. Which is to say, the internal bits of the charging mechanism no longer work reliably. Buying a new charger will not fix this problem. When the battery is *charged* the rest of the phone works just fine, but it's hard as hell to ensure the battery is reliably charged.

I am cranky as hell about this. Most anyone who knows me recognizes that my cell phone, who is officially named DevilBoxen, is a nuisance, something I put up with having because yes, occasionally it is useful to be able to text people or call them or whatever. And because wifi still isn't reliably everywhere enough for me to just drag my laptop everywhere, or get a netbook.

At any rate, just in case something goes terribly wrong, I am busy copying down all the numbers I have in there right now. I've accumulated an awful lot over the past two and a half years, and some of you people have terrific names --"Conor Short Hair", "Lezzie Beth", "David Pigtails", "Chris Wombat"...lovely stuff, and I immediately know who every one of the so labeled people are. (And I bet in at least two cases, you do too!)

So, I ask you a Highly Important question. If I were to put your number into my phone, under any name you could possibly choose, what name would it be? In a perfect world, it'd be a name I can remember is yours --this is why I input tons of handles, and have a few different people marked as being met at Diesel-- but this isn't a perfect world, and I want to know how you think you should be listed.

Go wild!

MOOP!

ETA: Bonus points if you correctly guess what name I already have you under!

You are wise to make a hardcopy backup. Everyone should do that.

Have you sorted out a plan for replacing the phone yet? Who is your service with?

I have a Samsung A660 hiding in my stash, from my old Atlanta(Sprint) service. It's mostly Just A Phone (can do texts, nothing else worth note), but near-pristine; a little discoloring on the battery casing from heat, and I don't think I ever dropped it for the 2.5 years it was active.

If the phone is compatible with your service (or can be made to), we can discuss it further via PM if you're interested.

What everyone really should do is get a pdaphone and sync it to their computer regularly (almost-daily). Of course, "everyone" should also be making frequent backups of their computer, like once a week or more. That way, "everyone" would have their contacts on their phone, on their computer, and on their backup - three copies, and never losing more than the last few days of updates.

That would involve getting a PDAphone. My phone was very specifically chosen because it was the only model I could get that was just a phone --no web, no GPS, and NO BLOODY CAMERA.

I'm pretty sure that the third of those, at least, will have to be given into. And I'm deeply annoyed by that, because I don't want a shitty camera attached to my phone. I have a perfectly good point and shoot that's just a little bigger than the phone, and has *significantly* better resolution, options, and UI.

I've tried using PDAs before, and I don't. There's no point to me having one --it's currently more crucial that I just make sure I have all the numbers now. If I did lose the numbers, not the end of the world --there's not a person on there who I don't have other options of communication with.

Hmm. You don't want web, gps, or camera, but is there a reason you really want to NOT have them? I mean, would they hurt you with their presence, if they just happened to come along with some other feature that was useful (like the ability to sync) ?

I've gotta say, my previous phone was chosen because it had a camera. I never ever used the camera, but it balanced in my hand much better than its cameraless cousin. (And I could afford to think of a camera as feature-which-makes-it-less-topheavy instead of feature-that-takes-pictures)

I have an old camera-less Nokia I can wipe & pass onto you. Phone & text only; when I walked into the Sprint store to purchase a new batteryfor it the clerks literally laughed at me. I had to get the battery online.

O.O

I'll get back to you on that, but we use Sprint. I have to find out what's going on anyways --among other things, my parents are moving in about a year and a half, meaning we don't particularly want a two year phone contract that getting a new phone for anyone would imply.

But yeah. We'll see, and thanks regardless of whether it works or not.

If they're moving in a year and a half the disconnect fee for the contract would be nil.

The worst they are for non-smartphones is $200, and they reduce by $10 a month. So in a year and a half you'd be at practically zero to escape the contract.

Oh -- and I'm allowed to mail phones and do Sprint. We have a very simple phone in stock... Does have a camera, but it's MilSpec-1. The Sanyo 3810. http://www.sanyowireless.com/product.aspx?v=103

Even if you don't want to buy through me, look into it. :)

Ohhey! If it is at all possible to get that phone from you, that would be an amazing amazing thing. Mom and I are trying to find any way to get me a phone, and it looks like if I have a phone, I can transfer my number, etc without having to buy a new contract from Sprint.

Soyeah. Thoughts?

Would that be for your home and cell numbers, like I have, or are there specific numbers for such things that I should differentiate between in my phone?

But they're not "home" and "cell", they're voice and texting numbers. So they probably would be the ones you have now, labeled as home and cell, except you've mislabeled them :) The 781 number is for voice calls (and it frequently goes to my cell, whenever I don't expect to be near a landline).

I'm going to take a wild guess that I'm Chris Wombat. I just have a feeling you would put me in as that. Almost no idea why.

As for my handle, I'm perfectly content with that staying as it is.
Posted by [identity profile] lordrefa.livejournal.com
I'm guessing that I'm likely "Ross (Origins)".
I'd rather be something like "Ross, the studly-virile!", and I might just get that in your phone because I'm probably the only Ross you know. :)

i'm thinking HarPants unless i'm completely mistaken... and really, if it is, i'd like to keep it 'cause it fills me with *glee!* And if it's not, man, what else would have it been? Auntie Har doesn't seem right.... Not a clue.

Soyar, HarPants! ^_^

There are three names I tend to go by with friends. One is my real name, Buddha. Another is my online handle, Blaise Pascal. Either would be fine and appropriate in your phone, and unlikely to conflict with anyone else.

My old phone I could plug into the computer with an adaptor cable to sync it. My current phone I can sync wirelessly (but I had to write the iSync plugin for it, as Apple doesn't support this phone in the United States for some barking reason). If you have a SIM card, you can copy the phone data onto it (but you have Sprint, which had GSM and took a giant step backward into CDMA, so probably no SIM card).

As for what I might be stored under, I'm guessing "long-haired guy" is taken, as is "Greykell's weird friend", so I'm gonna guess "JTOD" (which is what [livejournal.com profile] gore_whore_5 calls me) (guess what it stands for!).

Hmm... I'm probably listed as Ryan, which at the moment is almost hilariously incorrect. You might wish to input the proper number as "[my real name] - Home". If you don't have my contact info, give me a buzz, and I'll get it to you.

I'm guessing you list me as Mom I suppose there's the smallest chance you list me as WulfMom.

Either is correct.

And for all you folks saying we could cancel her contract for free, that's correct. The problem is with our family plan currently with Sprint, if we change any ONE phone we add a 2 year contract. T'hat's what Sprint makes us do. SO we actually have to change all four phones on the plan because why change Sorcy's phone and then 3 months later have to do the Wookie's phone because his suddenly stops charging too, they're all phones of equal age and abuse.

Add to that the Wookie goes to school in a place that doesn't have any Sprint service. I need to force him to somehow contact me (last three emails completely ignore, last facebook update from him approximately 2 weeks ago and involved the game Mafia) and get him to let me know what cellphone plans work out there in the mountains of West Virginia. This will involve him actually speaking with other students and will thus cause even more time to go by as he considers whether this is really that important to him even if it is to us.

Once we know what company we are going to get our new phones from I will need to go to said company and pick out new phones for all of us including the one in West Va and the one up in Boston. THEN I have to get the Sprint phones turned off and the new company's phones turned on all with our correct numbers. AND THEN I have to get said phones to said kids... did I mention that the Wookie's school does NOT get mail service. He was supposed to get a Post Office box at the local post office last September... this has not happened and thus I have no way to send him anything at all, the school accepts mail for students but WILL NOT tell them that said mail is being held... They drive me crazy!

Oh yes, and of course as Sorcy said, we're moving in a year and a half and I'd kind of like to know that the new phone company phones will work where we're moving to (although I suspect most of the major carriers will work just fine in most of the Chicago area.)

SO, not as easy as you all seem to imply. If anyone is willing to go to Bethany, West Virginia and slap my son into answering his email, it will all move much quicker. Feel free to volunteer.
