Boston ComicCon

A couple weeks ago, everyone's favourite avatar pimp,
skullx posted that he was going to the Boston ComicCon. Being as he's a Massachusetts based sluggite who I haven't met yet, and being as I like comics, I figured the only logical thing to do was to go and meet him, and buy comics from him and stuff.
(And yes, I warned him first. I'm not (that) creepy!)
I wound up having a total blast. He was sharing table space with this awesome girl called Juli who draws a webcomic called Wicked Unscripted, which I think Veronica will enjoy, and which grasps the whole "Yes, I am a geek, and yes, I am a girl" thing rather nicely. The three of us plus the guy at the next table wound up chatting for the better part of two hours, which was pretty damn glorious.
Oh yes. The guy at the next table. This is my "cons make the world a lot smaller" moment of the week.
I say hello to him, and we have a bit of a "don't I know you?" thing. I wasn't at Connecticon, he doesn't go to Diesel each week, we establish that we both look really familiar, but don't quite know where from. And we go ahead and (re?)introduce ourselves anyway --his name is Dirk.
At one point, Skullx says something along the lines of "So what is this dance thing you keep doing?" Dirk instantly responds with "THAT'S where I know you from!!" Much zohmygoding follows, because, yeah. We both go to the Monday night SCD class over at Springstep. Dude.
For reference, Dirk draws a comic called Paradigm Shift, which I've seen at least mentioned (thank you, Ms. Garrity1) and whatnot. This makes him probably the second most famous person I've ever danced with. (Firstmost? Naomi Novik. She has written some books about some dragons that are apparently excellent.)
Butyes. I wound up going ahead and buying the first Paradigm Shift book from him, and read it on the T home --I turned the last page, and went "Wait. Wait, wait, wait, there needs to be more story here goddamnit, because I am intrigued!", so I take that as a very good sign indeed. Also bought the complete set of Radbu comics, and a "Geektastic!" shirt from Juli. AND on the whole swag thing, all three of them drew me dinosaurs, adding to my awesome collection of awesomeness.2
Soyeah. It was a damn good day.

MOOP!
1: Shaenon Garrity drew an omgamazing comic called "Narbonic" for several years. It was up on the site Modern Tales for awhile, and the Modern Tales kids look out for each other, and occasionally link to each other. Meaning I'd seen Dirk's name and artwork before I ever even moved to Boston, just through that.
2: At AnimeBoston I started the most amazing collection in the world: I get webcartoonists (and, you know, other awesome people) to draw me pictures of dinosaurs. I am up to nine --Kilika (also known as the nicest guy in all of webcomics, also, he gets bonus points for having drawn me a surfboarding triceratops in my copy of his book), Garth Graham, some kid at Anime Boston, Mah awesome little sister, Brian Wilson (Who I believe is Kilika's arch-nemesis), Jennie Breedan, and now the three mentioned above --Skullx, Juli Meyers, and Dirk Tiede.
It is the Best Collection Ever. You cannot possibly argue with that.

on 2008-11-04 07:57 am (UTC)I've been reading Paradigm Shift for about a year now. Don't think I'd actually talked to Dirk at dance, yet, but still.
