I'm embarrassed to admit how long that took me to convert (and even more embarrassed to admit I screwed up my binary scanner), but it was totally worth it.

Yeah, me too--I used a perl eval hack, but couldn't remember the binary numeric syntax -- and had to (gasp!) look it up. (as it was, it might have been faster just doing binary addition, just because do { my ($i, $sum); for($i=0; $i < length($str); $i++) { $sum += substr($str,$i,1) * 2**$i } $sum } } may be quicker to write than the few minutes it took me to realize my number formula was octal, not binary, and look up the right prefix.
