Mar. 18th, 2014 12:37 amSo here's a thing I've been doing with my world. In mid-January or so, I picked up habitRPG, and found myself pretty well enthralled by it. hRPG is a little brightly coloured pixelated "game", where you score experience points and gold for accomplishing real world tasks. Gain enough experience, and you start gaining levels. Gain enough levels, and you start getting magic powers, and being able to buy cool equipment and adorable pets and the like.
It divides the tasks into three categories: Habits, Dailies, and ToDo. Habits are reoccurring tasks, and can have either a negative or a positive association (lose health every time you bite your nails, gain it whenever you remember to say thank you in the lunch line). Dailies are tasks that ought to get done EVERY DAY --and if you miss a day, you'll lose health. ToDos are one-time tasks that can give you a big boost to your experience once you FINALLY get them completed.
Best of all, the task lists are entirely customizable. You can put whatever you think is important to your life! My habits include boring stuff like flossing and doing laundry, but they also include spending time practicing my juggling, or posting to livejournal (yep, I'm getting points for this.). Also customizable is a list of rewards you can create. Tasks all give you a little bit of coinage. You can spend the coins in the game store (to buy those pets and equipment I was talking about) or you can set your own reward levels, like 5 coins means you treat yourself to a coffee after work, or 30 coins means you put your avatar in the inn and take a day totally off.
Like most self-regulated games (I refer to 750words and NaNoWriMo, specifically), one could, of course, lie through ones teeth in order to...what, get some pretty pixel animals? The point of the game is not really to get the shiny things, the whole point is to have an incentive to behave like a Real Adult. And for me, at least, it's working pretty well!
Lemme know if you check it out, or if you want to join my goofy little party. (currently it's me, my friend Wil, and Wil's roommate). Parties are cool because other people can see some basic facts about your profile (NOT, and this is crucial, what any of your tasks are) and can scold you when you're running out of health, or cheer you on when you gain another level. Also, there are BIG QUESTS that basically just mean "do all your shit even better for a week and you'll defeat a giant monster!", and those work better in parties.
Yay for good habits!
