Hey ho, let's write some words about some music! In a text editor, because there the whole plane wifi situation is Stupid, but I can aboslutely organize music on the plane without any wifi at all, no problems here.

(and then I'll upload to wordssite and Dreamwidth when I get to SeaTac. Oh yeah, I'm on my way to visit my partner Fetian in Sacramento! It's going to be a lovely time!)

Step one this time around was to put on my big fuckoff headphones that Tuesday gave me as a handmedown a couple years ago, and revel in the fact that any sort of earmuff on the plane cuts the ambiant noise so much! Even if they aren't technically any kind of noise cancelling! This is great! Now I need to figure out what music to pipe through them --I finshed the Kate Nyx, so I need a different background for now.

Oh, I know the answer actually. Original Concept Cast of The Scarlet Pimpernel, because spoiler alert, I just finished reading this proto-superhero story from like 1905 and thought it was a lot of fun, even if it gives complicated feels vis-a-vis class war and union solidarity. I might actually have any idea of what's going on! (There're four or five tracks from this musical that I love _so much_, but I think I've maybe never listened to the whole thing straight through, and I've never seen it. I am not good at divining plots of musicals from just their songs (especially because I'm not great at differentiating voices, talking to _you_ Wicked, and my struggle of figuring out which of The Two Boys are singing about The Two Girls and vice versa)

Anyways. REMARK TIME! It's been a while, which makes me very glad I wrote down where I left off: Having finished L7.

  • Okay first observation is that what I currently have on my computer is the Concept Cast, and I think the one I grew up with is OBC and like...this is...not the correct Into the Fire. I mean, it's still a banger, this musical has some _amazing_ tracks, but I think I am even less than normal going to have guesses about what's going on. BACK TO ADDING MORE MUSIC OKAY BYE.

....no wait, I take it back, this version slaps.

  • I feel slightly bad that there are many _genuinely_ talented musicians who I am collapsing into "Dave Wiesler et al", but also Dave Wiesler is quite honestly probably my single favourite Scottish musician (Kate Barnes can give him a run for his money tho) and I've made a point of trying to buy as many of his CDs as I possibly can. Sorry Laura, Paul, Daron, Naomi, Ralph, and Hanneke...

  • Lemon Demon might also be up there in "artists who I have a LOT of loose tracks but no full albums". Except I do own Spirit Phone, I bought it some Bandcamp Friday. And then 11 loose tracks, putting him (them?) just below Dar.

  • This concept cast continues to be a banger and it's amazing how much more I get out of a musical by having read the book it's based off of like immediately before listening. That being said, I do want _my_ version of Madame Guillotine, the one that sounds _right_.

...I will forgive it for being a little clearer to parse, since I am missing a handful of lyrics. Meanwhile it is time for The Riddle and god, this musical is not bangers only, but the bangers from it are SO GOOD.

  • If Leonard Nimoy's "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" isn't an Internet Geek Darling then I don't even know why I made the category.

  • found disc 2 of Fantasia! I think I am able to avoid the urge to start a big fucking project attacking Gracenote (or whatever we're using these days) to fucking _line up the information from disc 1 and disc 2 so they'll be in the same place_ but that's only because it sounds really arduous and not actually worth it. But, as I keep repeating, this is why I keep doing this project.

  • I found Turning Turning! I can put this in my pub songs playlist!!! It's such a good round and it's so hard to actually teach and it's _very_ on the list of things I'd like to lead at some point.

  • ...I should just add a note to the beginning of this post that by "remarking on music" I half mean "squeeing over how fucking good the music is from The Scarlet Pimpernel". Like, this isn't a new fact, I've loved it for so long, but the fact that I can listen to a totally different cast and still be swooning is a Good Sign! (I mean, I say new cast, but it's still Linda Eder who is one of the few female vocalists my mom goes gaga for.) Anyways, Creation of Man is such a great little song and I have wanted to do a burleque to it for so long.

  • "Lindsay Sterling (Probably) is such a fucking funny name for an artist folder. I will...go ahead and put that on the flag list to sort out sometime in the future.

  • "The fuck is "Lin Manuel Miranda and the Cast of Hamilton" that's not the naming convention for Hamilton at all what is in he...OH. OH YES GOOD." --me, finding my copy of "Bloody Demon Barber"

  • Congratulations DJ Lobsterdust, for being the first[1] mashup artist where I said "okay yeah, you get an actual folder instead of being dumped into the undifferentiated mass of things I've grabbed from Bootie back when I was really good at doing that". Titus Jones will get this treatment as well, when I get down to him.

[1] Neil Cicereiga's Mouth Albums were already in their own folder --astute readers will notice that things are _mostly_ alphabetical, but remember that there was all the music from 2019-2024 that I already imported (it was generally better sorted).

  • The secret sub-classification folder of "Classical or Whatever" is probably another one of those genre choices that will make everyone else Very Mad At Me. (most recently the London Philharmonic Orchestra performing Pink Floyd)

  • My mother is sometimes deliciously petty, which I am currently noting because I'm pretty sure she's the one who updated the Gracenote entry for Heisman: The Musical to have listed as artist "Long Reach!" followed by the guy who wrote the fucking thing.

(long story short: My high school was approached by this dude who wrote a musical and we got the rights to perform it for free and a chance to do a studio recording in exchange for him being able to use said recording to shop around to bigger theatres. Ultimately, he was somewhat of a pain in the ass and it probably wasn't worth it. To the best of my knowledge, he has not yet successfully made it to Broadway :P)

  • Speaking of things from my high school, here is the school song/rap thing that someone wrote (WHO WE BE? LONG REACH!) and I am absolutely putting it into my queue, because I kinda hate myself and would like to engage in full-body-cringe at 35000 feet altitude.

  • Whoops, apparently earlier in this project I misspelled Lynyrd Skynyrd and just nearly had two folders of them. How could this have possibly happened?

(I have Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird. Unlike the many "wait, how do I not have the one hit?" I feel I have completely nailed the route-one options here.

  • ...and Mara Shae has also been collapsed into Dave's et al. Sorry. :(

  • "You can't touch the lightning we too hot for all that, we rep Columbia we put them back on the map now who we be?" I regret to inform everyone that I don't hate the extremely 2006 rap shittily recorded over a drum kit for my high school.

  • Obviously I have four tracks by Marvin the Paranoid Android. _Obviously_. (I think Reasons to be Miserable) is probably the best of the lot).

  • I did decide to put Lazytown into Children's and not Internet Geek Darlings, but it was close. (Did you know it's a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake?)

  • .....I have three copies of Massive Attack's "Teardrop". Good job kiddo. That's an easy cull at least. (There's a version of this project where I get serious about the duplicates. I'm not quite there...yet. But it is on the list.)

And by putting away the Matchbox Romance track, I now have 720 folders remaining and am past the halfway point! As a bonus data point, my library is up to 11,485 songs! Good job me!
