Dec. 27th, 2010 02:35 pmDear everybody:
If a person on the internet goes to their personal journal and makes a post talking about how they dislike their fandom's tendency to do "X" (and especially the tendency to do "X" even in posts barely on topic to the fandom itself), and wish that their fandom would perhaps limit doing "X" to specific places or on-topic posts about "X" (Maybe a special "X" community?) the correct response to that post is to:
a) Agree and say that you too are annoyed by the pervasiveness of "X"
b) Respectfully disagree with the sentiment without doing any of "X"
c) DO "X" DO "X" DO "X"!!! AND ARGUE LOUDLY ABOUT HOW "X" IS RIGHT WITH ANYONE WHO DISAGREES!
Hint. The correct answer is not c
Honestly people, have we not somehow figured out the idea of being a decent human being when going to play in other people's spaces? Like, maybe I'm all weird, with my "respect" ideas, but if I know a particular behaviour annoys a certain person, especially if they make a point of publicly stating that that behaviour annoys them, I...do my best to not do that around that person.
Like, oh. my. god! This is such a novel concept, I know. And of course, I'm not talking about things I am, I won't change that no matter how nicely they ask. But when it comes to things I do, especially if I'm in someone else's space...sure! Most things I do are not crucial components of myself.
And the ones that are? The things that I am simply not willing to compromise on? Well, there's this excellent thing called the door, or the 'close window' button or whathaveyou. If I truly won't change a behaviour for someone who politely asked, then I just remove myself from the situation.
And if I really don't agree, and absolutely have to do some form of "X" myself, I can just...not say anything there. Really. I know it's a shocking thing on the internet, but you don't have to respond to every comment anyone has ever posted. In fact, I pretty regularly just shut the browser window and leave whatever site is making me want to throttle everyone. Especially when it's because of entertainment. (Note the lack of comments out there of me arguing fiercely that Middleman is the greatest show and how dare you show even the slightest criticism to it.)
I seriously do not understand the fervor of fandom sometimes.
