I went to Jeremy's wedding!
One of the most immediately apparent themes was that apparently all my high school friends are married now. I was at the Long Reach table with Veronica (married, although her hubby is back home in MD with the kids), Rohan (married 5 years, his wife was there and awesome), Anne (married a year and a half, her husband was there and stiff-but-nice) and Frosh (married six months, his wife was there and lovely).
It was also kinda fascinating talking to these people who were _incredibly_ important to me fifteen years ago, most of whom I have not said one word to in over a decade. How are you? Uh...well...how long a timeframe are you asking about?
I'm good, is the real answer. I'm happy. I have a job that I love and am excited to tell people about. I have my collection of amazing partners who I love and am excited to tell people about. I have absolutely baller hobbies that fill me with sparkly joy, which I love and am excited to tell people about. So honestly, not showing up with an SO turned out to not at all be a problem, but it was a briefly weird observation.
Mostly at the wedding though, I danced. The DJ was quite good, and the music was quite pointedly designed to appeal to the early-thirties crowd. I danced as hard as I possibly could without injuring myself, sometimes alone, sometimes with other lovely people. I think I am three-for-three on attending weddings this year and dancing with at least one of the new spousen. I also really enjoyed getting to dance with a high school acquaintance, someone I'd never known well. He introduced me to his partner with "this is Kat, have you seen them dance? They go hard!" which felt like the desired testimonial.
(He also went hard. Actually, the level of hardness on the dance floor was *much* higher than I anticipated for a non-dancers wedding. It helps that Jeremy did swing a bunch through college and post, but the selection of people they invited were absolutely willing to rock out with their cocks out. Almost literally, in aforementioned acquaintance's case, as he got warm enough to shed his dress pants and arrange some napkins into a little loincloth over his underpants. It was...a very good wedding look, and implied some very good wedding shenanigans.)
I danced, but also I hugged my friend, and smiled when he told me "I think, besides my family, you're the person here who has known me longest" and I held Veronica's hand during the ceremony and I laughed at the sheer number of people who told me at some point or another "I always remember (and miss!) your mom's new years parties..." (all of them. I think every single high school friend said that to me at some point).
My friends are finding joy and families and happily ever afters. I am too, sometimes in a different way than the rest of them. It's a good thing, and it's been a good weekend.
Tomorrow I will brunch a bit, and then fly home and rest there. I am looking forward to it.
