My reaction — and forgive me if I'm missing your point — is that everybody is just performing their gender presentation, even the people who look most easy and "natural" in their performance. The same is true of any learned activity, in my experience. I used to instruct my dance students — and still tell my Latin classes — to fake it, because that's all anyone is doing; all you can do is fake it more or less realistically.
My point is that if sometimes you want to play the role of "pretty, feminine woman," you shouldn't let yourself be held back by the feeling that you're "just faking it," because that's all anyone is doing. Be held back instead by the red dress problem, which sounds serious and should be rectified forthwith.
