A while ago I read someone's online journal who was trying out polyphasic sleep. He said that he was fine for two or three days, and then was completely useless for the next two weeks while his body adjusted to it. He couldn't function, he was so tired.
Polyphasic sleep is a neat idea, but it's sort of impractical because your schedule has to be so perfecly regimented, all the time. If, for example, you need to stay up for a little bit longer than your normal awake-period is, you basically can't, so you're screwed.
