A shoe or a boot is so done, though. It's virtually chiche, and I wouldn't say it's low-class, but rather that it's done to show devotion by a suitor to the owner of the shoe/boot.
"Out of the box" is, in my opinion, like out of the bottle, which I think is fine. But people look down on boxed wine. So it's drinking low-class wine, not necessarily drinking it from a low-class container. Similarly, while mixing red and white is generally considered not a classy thing to do, it doesn't reflect on your container of choice.
The banana-skin is neat, but not really low class.
