Grand Marches: IMO, shorter than you think. Or, perhaps, each figure will take longer than you think. "You" being the most extremely generic form.
Long enough that everybody can get a good sense of who's there, smile/wink/nod/scowl/whatever at anybody they have a particular interest in, get a feel for the nifty things people are wearing, and do a few neat march figures.
I have no idea in any objective measure of time; maybe I should start bringing a stopatch to balls.
