A show of multiple shades and dimensions

I am thrilled to announce that Middleman, some 16 years after it came out, still holds up pretty gosh-darn well!

DnD friend Scoop has been watching it with me --because he's recently Boston (re)based, we have now twice managed to do collective DnD from my place with bonus watching Middleman afterwards. Today we watched episodes 3-5 and I just really enjoyed it!

One of my observations is that the episodes seem to do a lot more recap/exposition than I think of these days when I think TV. I'm not sure how much is specifically part of Javi's quick-paced all-references-all-the-time-(including-to-itself) style, and how much is a feature of television from an era where it wasn't assumed that someone is watching the entire season in a few days.

My other observation is that I'm probably now older than EmmEmm and oh gods. I don't know if I'm ready to handle that. Maybe not quite? Maybe we're the same age?

Anyways, if you need any proof that the form of my attraction has gotten steadily queerer as I've aged, there you have it. I will always have a soft spot for clean-cut Matt Keesler('s arms), but oh dear, he is so rather too cishet for me. We'll see if I change my mind when we get to episode eight.

I did wind up saying something to Scoop about how the second DVD (eps 5-8) are when the show gets *really* good. We've got trout zombies, boy bands, the titanic, and sorority ghosts and let me just say _fuck yes_ to all of them. I explained it as the first four episodes need to set up and dwell on Wendy's background trauma so that we know what's up with her, but by now we've got it all understood and can just move forward into The Good Shit.

Anyways, I have seen The Pilot Episode Sanction some twenty or thirty times across my life, and I'll happily do that more, so hmu if you need to enjoy this with me sometime. Maybe in the fall if covid numbers are good I'll try and do another Middleman party or something...

Yuletide reveal!

I wonder if there is some sort of inverse relationship between the number of posts I make today, and the number of comments I receive on all those posts. I suspect I will quickly become annoying and awful and you will all hate me. I look forward to it!

Anyways, the Yuletide stories have finally revealed authors, and that means I can link you to my two (both of which I assure you are horrible, just so you don't get to thinking that they're well written or anything.)

The first is my actual assignment. The prompt read "Ford and Arthur are stranded on a planet where it gets very cold at night and they have to huddle together for warmth." Now, I've been shipping weird ass-Hitchhikers crack for years. So, I present to you The Cold Sands of Anatidae. Spoiler: Ford and Arthur huddle together for warmth.

The second was my first ever random gift. I was browsing through the requests list, and had this moment of flail that there was someone out there who loved both Middleman and Black Books. It's Christmas Eve, I don't have anything better going on, "what can I write that combines these two".

Apparently I could write The Seven Stolen Books of Westminster Abbey which, uh, might turn into a series of stories, all crossing the Middlefolk with various other fandoms. (New headcanon: Roxy and Anya (from Buffy) totally hang out and are friends.)

I figure my journal might have a slightly higher than usual percentage of people who've seen both Black Books and Middleman, because I do evangelize both so thoroughly. And if you've somehow missed them, go and watch all the source material.

YAY YULETIDE. YAY STORIES. YAY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Yuletide letters!

HI AUTHOR HI AUTHOR HI AUTHOR!

I am pretty excited about this whole Yuletide thing. It's my second year doing it, so I've gotten rid of some of the jitters, and am now all about the excitement value. This is my letter to you, giving you a little bit of a better idea of what I'm interested in.

First off, I am super super happy that you want to write for one of my obscure and strange little fandoms. This is awesome! I will be happy with whatever sort of madness you write, because you wrote it for me, and that is pretty great of you.

At any rate, as you might have noticed from the COPIOUS NOTES I provided in my prompt, I babble too much. Have some EVEN MORE babbling! yay babble! )

If you think it will help, or if you want to waste some time, here are some of my favourite fanfics:

This is Where it Starts (Middleman, a fic I consider to be friggin _canon_ at this point, it's so good and so right. Platonic Lacey and DubDub --how they met their first year of college.)

Marvelous Things (Homestuck. Incredibly sweet coming of sexuality story re: demisexuality. I squee'd all over the place at this one.)

Two Daves No Waiting (Homestuck, porn without plot, two copies of one character equals instant _awesome_ threesome.)

The Naked Quidditch Match (Harry Potter, very silly.)

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (Harry Potter, as raised by scientists with the ideals of the enlightenment. Four hundred thousand billion words, all of them hilarious and smart and wonderful.)

Harry Potter and the Eagle of Truthiness (Harry Potter/Stephen Colbert crossover. Guess who the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is?)

Geniuses (Calvin (of "& Hobbes") and Jason Fox (of Foxtrot) slash. This is pretty much my biggest OTP of all time. If you want to disregard my entire Yuletide list and write me a Calvin/Jason fic from the geniuses universe, that would be okay too.)

Once More, With Feeling (BBC's Sherlock, him and John getting together partly due to parental meddling and OH it is so good)

The Paladin Protocol (Big Bang Theory, Sheldon/Penny, how they got together. Long but lovely.)

And last, but DEFINITELY not least, by Yuletide gift from last year:
Four Times Alexis Was The Adult (and one more) (Castle, platonic Alexis/Rick running around and just...being wonderful together. Melts my happy little heart.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Dear Yulegoat

So, I've decided to do Yuletide, despite having little-to-no experience in the world of internet fandom, and a nearly debilitating fear that I will do Everything Wrong and make the entire internet hate me. Or inadvertently find myself in the middle of OMGDRAMA.

Allegations that I just want to grow up to be Racheline someday are...well, completely true but have nothing to do with this. I just really like the concept of the Yuletide project, and anything that has a chance of getting me middlefic is a thing that I fully support.

Anyways. Dear person-who-is-writing-me-a-fic (Yulegoat? Why are you a Yulegoat? Oh dear, already this makes no sense!)

Hello there, lovely person who is going to write me a story! You are _super super nice_ and I just want to say thank you and also glee! about the fact that you are going to write a story just for me! That's really really cool.

I've never done this whole Yuletide thing before, and I'm not a huge fandom person (though I enjoy both writing and fannish things) and really, I'm quite concerned I am going to freak you out or something. (Mostly because one of my prompts was "genderswap mad science smut"1) So, I hope I'm doing this mostly right --I've stolen the general format from [livejournal.com profile] futuresoon, since she seems to be pretty savvy about this whole fandom thing2.

So, I think here is where I babble about more elaborate things for my stories? And try not to be too verbose, which tends to be difficult for me. Also, warning, allusions to porn and kink and stuff )

Again, I hope this wasn't _way way way_ too long, and I hope you're not utterly freaked out by me or whathaveyou and I hope the plot bunnies go forth and multiply and you can catch a nice one and write the story easily! Also, I hope you find a five dollar bill and can buy a nice coffee somewhere.

1: To my friendslist, if you identified the fandom without peeking under the cut, I give you three gerbils and a tin of mints. :mgrin:

2: And if you ARE Futuresoon, well then. That would be _pretty damn amazing_ is all I'm saying. And I expect one bang-up story from you, young lady! Also, like I've been saying for basically forever, we should hang out sometime. What's going on your week of March 7-13th next year?

Also, I am of the firm opinion that any outfit that includes boots should have the boots be reasonably visible.

Okay, *fine* JoshZed. If you insist.

((Yes, this is just an excuse for me to be a camwhore. I do that.))

These are what my boots look like. And I keep feeling like this picture looks manipulated, or faked --like those are a different person's legs. But I really am that flexible.

My like...sixteenth attempt to get both my face and the boots in a pic, without looking like two people making a trick photo.

And this one turned out too dark, but I just look so shibby professional! Except my hair being a wreck, but shh.

Middleman!

So, there's this really damn interesting person known as [livejournal.com profile] rm who posts a lot about things I'm interested in, like sexuality and gender. Especially gender. Lots and lots of very awesome gender things.

One of the things I have gathered from reading all this is that, occasionally, he sees fit to dress himself up as Ianto, from Torchwood. Not as a cosplay, specifically, somuch as a "it's time for work, and today I would like to look nice and smooth and stylish like Ianto". I mean, as far as I can tell, of course --I don't know his exact motives in the action, merely that it is something he does sometimes, and completely rocks.

Rach may have Ianto days. I apparently have Middleman days. At some point, my brain ticked over into "goddamnit, Sorcy is a bit of an irresponsible twit, but MM is about the most steadfast and responsible person ever. Let's be him today, instead, and get stuff done!"

And so, after lunch when I came back to the room...

...I redressed myself accordingly.

It's a fantastic outfit. The whole thing is designed to feel solid, accomplished, good about myself. Those are grade A boots of butt kicking there, the cargo pants are designed for girls, with actual pockets, the belt is in the least known of "my colours", the button down shirt and tie are just professional, and the jacket is made pretty much entirely of win, some more win, a little bit of awesome, and even more win.1

Oh, but of course, I'm leaving out my favourite part.

Hey, at least if I'm a tremendous dork, it's for one of the better organizations out there. (It's worth noting that I'm also wearing boy scout socks...also that sometime I should write an essay detailing my thoughts and feelings on GSUSA and BSA)

1: Okay, and a tad "needs buttons" but whatever. I can fix that.

Life and other stuff

Made it to Cambridge around eleven thirty this afternoon. Parked, and wandered to the Cambridge Commons restaurant with Dad and Alys for lunch, which was yummy. More importantly, took the obligatory hair-in-whalespout-formation picture of Al...my collection continues to grow. Muahahaha!

Getting one next year will be hard though, since she's not gonna drop me off in Boston. Hmm. We'll figure something out.

Checked in, got my room keys, and dragged my stuff up to my room. Was done a little before one, so I wandred out to the Cambridge Commons place, to hang with [livejournal.com profile] tirerim, [livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen, and I believe [livejournal.com profile] akawil. Much...well, hanging out commenced, including BDan giving me an incredibly awesome gift that I can't discuss in an unlocked post, and general napping and snuggling and chatting and yay!

Also, paste can be used to cure dancing. *nodnods*

Got a ride from Merav and her boy back to the school, so I could go to an incredibly boring meeting that boiled down to "smile, and don't scare the freshmen off". More importantly, got to see the absafantastically wonderful girl mentioned in this post. She is doing just ducky, besides a very casual break up with her boyfriend and a just as casual progression to the next boyfriend. This affects me not in the least except for two things:

1) Ryan may now be single, and while it is not my way to go after the mono, I would not feel guilty kissing him. He is one of those made to order Sorcy-tropes-of-attractiveness boys. This is probably not going to pan out in any way shape or form, but, you know. Options.

2) I can no longer crush on them as a couple, which is sad. I really really adored them as a unit, in additin to having a reasonable crush on him and a substantial one on her.

ANYWAYS

After thing, wandered off to Magus's, because, well, duh. We have snuggled and chatted and read the Middleman thirteenth episode comic, which...dude.

It is not as epic as the TV show, but it would be nearly impossible to be. Butbutbut, it has a Wilhelm scream! And a Howie scream, which is a similarly stock scream. AND A REFERENCE TO MANOS: HANDS OF FATE! And the Middleman's real name, which...made me wince, honestly. Because I don't know, I like him better as hella mysterious. And Wendy in a Leia-bikini, and the most mangafied Lacey you can imagine.

I am happy about it.

Theoretically, crepes will be happening soon. Tomorrow, I get to go on the grand adventure of helping Freshmen move in. I'm not psyched, but that's life.

...I'm in Cambridge!

This is what I was running around in on Saturday morning.

"When we graduated college, we agreed on two things: No more underwear stealing boyfriends-"
"-Yeah, what was with those guys? We were like magnets-"
"-And no more waitressing."
"Well, that was before the student loans fairy left a little some-some under my pillow. You know all those times I got arrested protesting? It turns out there is such a thing as a permanent record, and they do look at it."
"Alright, where do I have to go for the free fries?"
*stands*
"Lacey, The Booty Chest?! Not the pirate themed sports bar with the scantily clad waitresses!

So, it's free comic books day! To celebrate, I hit up three different comic shops, and wound up walking out with a total of eighteen free comics, the first issue of Ellis's Ignition City, and this:

Bytheway, happy new years and I am still alive, as are Kat and Swing. The jury is still out on Magus, who may have the plague1.

Things that have been happening:

Watching some Black Books
Watching the entire internet at the party
Playing Agricola2
Watching the end of season two of Titus
Watching almost all the rest of Middleman4
Me working on a general "these were the resolutions of 2008 that I ignored, and here, have some resolutions for 2009 that I will ignore.

Annnnnndyeah. Now it is time for me to go to work. This is incredibly lame, though at least there are lovely people who ought to be around when I get home. Unless they die. Which would really really suck. So, uh, dearhearts, don't die, it will make me a sadKat.

In other news, yay, it's been a year for me and that pretty girl who I snog on occasion. Good for us!

1: No, he does not really have the plague. I tend to be wildly exaggeratey about things like that.

2: Dan4th, Dan4th, Dan4th, if you are reading this, get this game. *Totally* get this game. Get this game, and Magus3 and I will totally come over and play with you. Because ohmgods, it is a strategery game that I actually enjoy.

3: Once he recovers from the plague
