M-I-C, K-E-Y...

Twice in the last week I have encountered mice, which is...not great. I remain phobic --and the reaction I have to them is so totally different from every other fear reaction that I feel comfortable making that distinction.

On the plus side, I talked about it with my therapist today, and she was big on the "let's frame this as compassionately as possible" for me, which is yes her job but also a kindness that I should try and remember to do more often.

One of the things that came up was a "how often does this fuck with your life"? sort of thing, which put a nice perspective on it --I'm not sure I can remember the last time I specifically had to cope with a mouse before this week. Rats sure, and I am still also phobic of rats, but it's a lot less so and there's been a *lot* more exposure therapy there. Partly from friends with pet ratties who'll let me hold them for exactly as long as I feel comfortable and then pass them back, but honestly mostly from just...existing in a city.

At any rate, I'm hoping this week is a fluke, because I'm not gonna cope well if we've gone from "never" to "twice a week" on the mice front.

Different rodent

I am not trying to diminish your pain but based on timing and rodent-ness this is linked in my mind to a news story from the UK. A train was cancelled because two squirrels took over.

I am not phobic of mice, but they do inspire an instant rage reaction in me when I find them in the house, usually because that's a precursor to finding a great deal of mouse poop and smelly urine in my pantry. I thus will sympathize on the "disproportionate emotional reaction" front with you - and offer to come murder them if they're in your house. (If you don't want them murdered, that's OK too. It's not my house!)

Hugs.

I'm sorry you're dealing with mice. I've managed to kill several with traps in the last few days, after moving my cat's food bowls to higher locations. I've got trap recommendations if your household is interested in such.
