So, apparently, June 2009 is officially LGBT Pride Month.

...That's kinda awesome! I am proud of being me! Clearly I have to go kiss some girls (preferably while dressed like a boy) to celebrate!

In other news, I was on the news today --Fox45 was doing a piece on the Maryland MS bike ride, and mom went to be all "volunteering is awesome!" So yeah. I woke up at six fifteen in the morning and put on a corset, and then got to stand in the background holding a pirate flag. My life is a charmed one.

((And the only reason this was at all tolerable was because Brenton --a friend I picked up from Balticon and have been keeping each other up far too late at night ((:eyes:))-- had to get up at six for work, so the two of us wound up texting each other all morning.))

Work was pretty much hell today. Although [livejournal.com profile] shadowcaptain visited --that is decidedly less hellish.

Also, I bought a steampunky dress and some CDs.

Ohhey, Veronica and Jeremy are here. Awesomesauce!

Because setting aside special months and shit totally helps get across the message that LBGT are just like everyone else. Hey, why not have special marriages, too? And special bathrooms? And we can identify ourselves by our sexuality and it will be great, with special parades and everything!

Oh, Obama. Some people just miss the point entirely.

Also, NH apparently now has marriage equality.

Y'know, while I'd ordinarily be somewhat inclined to agree with you in questioning the effectiveness of special months, I feel I am personally in no position to suggest my intuition on this matter is superior to that of our country's first black president.

I don't know you, so I don't know if you are...

Hey, for me right now, it's acknowledgement that I exist, and that a lot of people I care about exist. I don't always get that from the government.

Hell, I'm probably not going to get the polyamorous acknowledgement in my lifetime. I'd like to at least be able to tell people I'm bisexual without them being totally confused or horrified. Oddly, I feel that having a month where I'm reminded that I *should* be proud of myself, yes, even this aspect that a lot of people find deviant and weird and wrong, kind of nice.

Clearly I have to go kiss some girls

No, no.

Clearly you have to kiss some of each gender.

Being proud of yourself for being bisexual is like being proud of yourself for liking Coke AND Pepsi. It is not "who you are" or even really a big deal. It's one small detail in the vastness of your personality, and spending your life coming out to people about that one small detail is a huge waste of precious time.

[identity profile] kdsorceress.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
And that's where we're gonna have to disagree. Being bisexual *is* a big part of who I am. Gender and sexuality are the things I find absolutely most fascinating in the world, the hows and whys of people and sex and kinks, and man, it's just really cool stuff.

You might just think of your blood as that red stuff that keeps your body full of oxygen, but to a hematologist, blood is just the most fascinating thing there ever was. Gendersex is my blood. ((Okay, not literally, that would be weird.))

Additionally, being proud of myself for being bisexual is not similar to being proud for liking coke and pepsi. There is not a deep negative social stigma to liking both coke and pepsi. I don't have to ever think twice before I admit I like both drinks, and take the gamble that I won't freak the other person out. Growing up in this country, with all the myriad media influences, has taught me that my bisexuality is something to be ashamed of. That same country telling me it's okay to be proud...it means a lot.

Liking both Coke and Pepsi or liking both girls and boys is not an accomplishment, or something you had to work at, or even something you had to think really hard about. It's just a preference.

Pride here is not the pride of accomplishment — it is the pride of self-respect, of self-esteem. It is pride in the face of a world that tries to make you feel shame.

I guess that is an accomplishment, come to think of it.
