there's a comment from Heinlein's "The moon is a harsh mistress" similar to "do not make laws for what your neighbor 'needs' to change, but rather what problems you see in yourself that you want to change"

that was paraphrased, but should apply nonetheless. if you want someone to change something, make sure you don't do it first, and then convince them using reason. do not force your beliefs on any other person. this life philosophy has held me for quite a while.

it simplifies down to: you can believe what you want and i'll respect that, just respect my beliefs.
