When Jake and I were looking at apartments downtown, we couldn't find a place that would even consider renting to us unless our monthly income was 3x the rent of the apartment, each. The place we're at now required 2x the rent of the apartment for us to qualify (I was slightly below that but they rounded up for me and gave it to us anyway).
