I disagree. I think 8 is too many (particularly without L'Extension, so each player only gets 10 cards). I think optimal is somewhere in the 4-6 range, where the game doesn't devolve into sheer ridiculous tedium when a color match comes out and you have to wait for all the slow play and pausing for a challenge every few turns until it clears.
(Alternately, with 7+ I prefer the other official color match rule where it's for the next single challenge. It's also confusing, but it's less annoying.)
