Top Songs of 2015!
I missed it last year1, but most years I post a list of the music I listened to in a big way over the course of the previous year. So! Here is the top songs of 2015! Organized vaguely chronologically.
Shut Up and Dance by Walk the Moon. I picked it up from the movie dance compilation that went all over the interwobs. One of my friends described it as an 80s dance tune written it 2014. That is a good thing! It is a tune just makes me *happy* on a fundamental level. I also had an excellent dance to it at WorldCon!
The Last Pirate by Matthew Ebel. This guy! I met this guy at Arisia, where he had a concert and was super charming in the dealer's hall. His music is fun too, and he's got some good robot thematic stuff going on. I like pirates especially, and so this is good stuff.
Neptune by SJ Tucker. So, ages ago I bought her album Mischief and pretty much only ever listened to Cheshire Kitten. Finally, I had gotten around to listening to the rest of the album, and homygod, good idea. I wrote a longer response about Neptune here, but Mischief is probably my favourite single s00j album.
Weightless by SJ Tucker. I had a long-term substituting job from March to June of this year. I found that when I was hanging out afterschool doing grading and the like, I quite wanted to listen to some music. s00j has her entire discography up on bandcamp, and then you can listen to all her albums. It's fabulous and useful.
I listened to this song a few times right when things were starting to get serious with K, and in that way that songs do when you're super into someone, I went all "aww, this song is totally, like, for him!" Time passed. I listened to the song more. Pause, recall that K and s00j used to date, check liner notes. No really, this song is totally like for him. LAUGH UNTIL I FALL OUT OF MY CHAIR. WELL DONE SOR.
Temptress by SJ Tucker. In case it wasn't clear, there was a four month span of this year where I was listening to almost exclusively s00j. This is not the last of her songs on the list. It is from her newest album, Stolen Season, which dropped in January and is fabulously bluesey.
The Mushroom Song by Tricky Pixie. At the very end of June I went to the NY FaerieFest, it was fantastic and actually surprisingly integral to my identity --this year has been in part about examining mySelf in relation to faerie-circus-etc. Anyways, the whole reason I went was because s00j is one third of Tricky Pixie (Hint: Neither Betsy or Alex are worse musicians, THIS IS A REALLY GREAT BAND), and the very first song played was Mushroom Song. Which I sobbed through before dropping my stuff in a pile and dancing my feet off for everything else they sang, often in the rain. Dance or cry, it's not even a choice. (More on NYFF here)
Glashtyn Shanty by SJ Tucker. Okay, last one. Incidentally, this is five s00j songs across five albums --I like fucking *everything* she's published. Anyways, this is from Wonders, which is her tie-in album to Catherine Valente's "Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her Own Making" which is a great book.
Brothers in Arms by Junkie XL. AKA the dude what composed the Mad Max: Fury Road soundtrack. AKA *the* best fucking track on the soundtrack. Do not listen to this while traveling, you will suddenly be going a hundred miles per hour and ready to chase someone *down!*. I love Star Wars2 (no spoilers), but I really love Fury Road too. It has been such a happy year for movies for me.
Never Look Away by Vienna Teng. Heh. I talked a bit about this quite recently, but no, when I was in Seattle it grabbed me by the brain and shook. Awesome damn song.
Praise your Gas by jere7my tho?rpe. This is the fifth jere7my song in my itunes library because sometimes I am thorough and successful in my stalking --it's the only one he's actually given to me. ANYways, he filked this for my birthday, and it is EVERYTHING I COULD EVER ASK FOR. It's a Fury Road (and Mad Max in general) version of P!nk's "Raise Your Glass" and if you're not excited about this link then you damn well should be.
Witchka by SJ Tucker. Yeah, I lied. This one is actually the last one of hers from this year. See my above note about fairy-circus-witchy type stuff. This song has the line "26 and mad as hell" which is a really comfortable sort of thing to have. I love this song so much and I have listened to it like fifty times this year.
One of Us by Heather Dale. I bought her Imagineer album after seeing folks squee about it on Facebook, and tossed it on Ida3 to listen to randomly in the course of my beautiful long eight mile commute. And then this came on one early morning and I found myself crying softly as I biked alongside the Charles, because oh glory yes. This song is, among other things, exactly how I feel about Racheline and vintage dancing.
Somebody Will by Sassafrass. I guess this was really from back at Balticon (and has appeared in different years as well), but it's also from when The Martian came out. This is the best song about going to space ever written. I sob like a fucking baby when it plays, every time. I love love *love* this song.
Out of the Woods by Taylor Swift. There we go! I've already linked to this post, but I'll link it again. This is the most recent song to grab me --only hit me a few days ago. It's lovely! I really like faboo bouncy-pop, it's important to my continued happiness.
I like me some music. I have no embarrassment about this list and you shouldn't either!

MOOP!
1: Largely because I never got around to putting most of my music onto my computer. We're talking two orders of magnitude here, more or less. I'm at over 10k tracks in my itunes, which is terrifying and awesome. And it's worth noting that the amount of music I am pumping into iTunes has gone *drastically* down since college or so. I should really get back to ripping 5-10 of my parents CDs every time I'm at their house.
2: Rey is *my girl!*. Soooooo happy with her existence!! She makes me feel warm and fuzzy and awesome in much the same ways that Toast and Furiosa do.
3: Technically Ida 2.0. My phone.
