So, about this time last year I made a list of the top songs of 2009. This year, I decided to be organized, and actually kept a playlist on my itunes labeled "Top Songs of 2010". Which I have...mostly ignored entirely.
But with a little bit of thrashing, I've managed to put this year's list together. Sorted by date added to my itunes.
Comfort and Joy from Batboy: The Musical, added 2007 11 28, got hooked over the summer and squirmed onto most general playlists since then.
(I might have a _thing_ for songs in which someone gets murdered. See also my 2006 obsession with the song "Alive" from Jekyll and Hyde)
Between by Vienna Teng, added 2008 04 20, played...the whole year but especially from Feb-May, posted about in March.
Between is a break-up song.
Or it's a poly song.
Take your pick.
Oasis by Amanda Palmer, added 2008 10 13, played whenever the damn hell I needed it, but notably in August and in November.
I stopped being able to like Amanda since she has a tendency to hurt people, have them explain the hurt, and not apologize or make any attempt to learn from the experience, which...frustrates me. So I've mostly stopped listening to her.
But I need this song.
Not a Virgin by Poe, added 2009 07 03, played mostly from the end of August through to October or so.
Don't read into it. It's a strength song, not a subtle message.
Boys Boys Boys by Lady GaGa, added 2009 12 30, played from February to June.
Watch your heart when we're together, boys like you love me forever. Theme song what now?
Just Another Day from Next to Normal, added 2010 01 07, played _the entire damn year_ but especially January into February.
Next to Normal flat out ate my brain this year. I have four more songs from it that deserve mention --You Don't Know and I Am The One, which I was listening to before I saw the play and still use as reinforcement for a fracturing mind; I Am The One (reprise) which hit perfectly in the end of January and remains a strength for one of my particular weaknesses; and Light, which I have mentioned here before.
All five of those songs have more than fifty plays in my itunes, which is respectable. Just Another Day is the clear winner though of music that affected and defined my year. It has 197 plays. It's the ninth most played song in my itunes. Yeah. _yeah_.
Maybe it's Crazy by Seanan McGuire, added 2010 02 11, played starting about when I got my wisdom teeth out into October or so, with a particularly nice resurgence from the end of November to the middle of December.
Red Roses and Dead Things by Seanan McGuire, added 2010 02 11, played from maybe September into November or so?
Corte de Pelo from Mulan, added 2010 04 08, played from April to June a lot, and again once school started again.
(It's the music from the scene in which she cuts off her hair and runs away from home, which I always found very striking.)
Bad Romance by Lady GaGa, added 2010 04 16, played from February to June, then ignored for part of the summer, then played hardcore all December.
This is...kinda...the song of the year for me. Lady GaGa is awesome, and I really enjoy her stuff. I watched the music video for this over and over, and listened to it over and over and OVER.
And jere7my has ruined everything forever, because he's cruel.
As Cool as I Am by Dar Williams, added 2010 05 05, played a TON in May and June and often the rest of the year.
I flat out will not be afraid of women, and I have used that specific language when calling out some of my boys for trying to use other girls against me.
Are You Out There by Dar Williams, added 2010 05 12, played a ton from May to July, then any other time I found myself behind the driver's wheel, or needed certain strengths.
Honorable mentions for Dar go to The Buzzer, It's Alright, and When I Was A Boy --I hit a huge Dar-kick for a while there, and it was _so_ good. She sing good, yes. But really, it's all about the two above. Especially considering that I added them eight months ago, and As Cool as I Am is the seventh most played song in my itunes (206 plays) and Are You Out There is the third most played song (233 plays).
I Gotta Feeling by the Black-Eyed Peas. Added (in a swing version) 2010 06 05, added (in a mash-up version with Boston's "More Than A Feeling") 2010 10 28, the first played from about June-July, and the second from October-December.
I need an actual version of this song. Also, Bootie Mashups kinda became the music of November and December. This is all jere7my's fault.
All the Small Lovers by DJs from Mars, added 2010 10 28, played all through November and December. And starting at the very end of November, I began using YouTube to listen to Kylie Minouge's All the Lovers by itself over and over again as well.
Which occurs to me to add a special segment to this year's list, since I started using YouTube to listen to good music more often:
Oasis: Minor key/major key version which is only funny if you're familiar with the song and the British controversy but then it becomes hilarious --by Amanda Palmer, played throughout June, November, and December.
Canvas Bags by Tim Minchin, played throughout April/May/June, and then again basically any time I went to YouTube for any reason
4-Chord Song by Axis of Awesome, played throughout April/May/June and again every time I went to YouTube. I heart me some good mash-ups.
AND THAT WAS MY YEAR, musically speaking. Wooo, this is a long post. Sorry about that.
